: Soviet damns Star Wars
WASHINGTON (AP) -
Soviet Pres. Konstantin
Chernenko, in a direct
challenge to President Ronald
t Reagan, condemned the U.S.
“Star Wars” program Thursday
as an “aggressive concept”
designed to achieve U.S.
military superiority over the
Soviet Union.
In an interview with Cable
News Network, the Soviet
leader said “to put it simply,
the aim is to acquire a capability
to deliver a nuclear strike coun
ting on impunity.”
Chernenko said the
U.S.-Soviet negotiations set to
resume on March 12 could solve
the problems of nuclear
weapons, but only if steps are
taken to prevent the militariza
tion of outer space.
Otherwise, Chernenko said,
the Strategic Defense Initiative
“would become a catalyst of an
uncontrolled arms race in all
directions.”
The Soviet leader made the
comments in written replies to
questions submitted by Stuart
Loory, CNN’s Moscow bureau
chief.
Reagan has defended the pro
gram, known popularly as Star
Wars, as a research venture
designed to determine whether
the United States could be
shielded with futuristic
technology from attacking
missiles.

ALBANY (AP) - A
special legislative hearing
will be held Monday at
the state Capitol in Salem
to consider the closures of
Champion International’s
Lebanon mill and United
Foods’ frozen food pro
cessing plant in Albany, a
state senator said
Thursday.
Champion on Tuesday
announced the closure of
its Lebanon plywood mill,
throwing about 585 peo
ple out of work. United
Foods plans to close its
Albany plant in March,
eliminating about too
full-time jobs and 280
seasonal part-time jobs.
Reversal sought
for video decree
SALEM (AP) - The Oregon
Supreme Court was asked
Thursday to overturn a lower
court ruling that barred two
Portland television stations
from broadcasting videotaped
testimony given by Bhagwan
Shree Rajneesh.
The issue goes beyond the
civil trial last year involving the
controversial Indian guru.
The state’s highest court has
to decide for the first time
whether videotaped testimony,
rather than a written transcript
of witnesses’ courtroom
statements, becomes a public
record once it’s played in court.
KOIN-TV and Fisher Broad
casting, owner of KATU-TV,
sued Multnomah County Cir
cuit Judge Clifford Olsen after
he refused to let the stations
copy the taped interview with
Rajneesh.
