anti-abortion bombing, while
the other group was asked to
disrupt an anti-abortion
meeting.
In the second group, most
members said they did want to
disrupt the meeting to the point
where their opponents were
denied freedom of speech.
However, an older woman in
the group balked at this sugges
tion and advocated obstructing
the meeting and its speakers as
much as possible.
Although she shook her head in
disappointment several times
during the discussion, the
woman eventually voiced ap
proval to the group’s basic pro
posal of carrying placards at the
meeting and to lower the signs
if asked, but to remain at the
meeting unless forcibly
removed.
However, the woman add
ed a final warning. Polite
demonstrations are all right for
now, she said, but they will
become useless as the country
sinks deeper into au
thoritarianism.
A good deal of time at the
workshop was spent on Gan
dhi’s approach to non-violence
and philosophy of “tapasya,”
or self-suffering. Gandhi believ
ed such sacrifice expanded a
person’s consciousness, but
Bryan said she can see how this
view conflicts with modern
feminism.
Gandhi’s entire
philosophy, said Bryan, asks
women to accept the passive,
nurturing and self-sacrificing
role they have been forced into
for centuries. Nonetheless, she
told workshop participants that
even Gandhi preferred violence
to powerlessness.
Non-violence is only effec
tive where there is the capacity
for violence and pacifism is
freely chosen over aggression,
she said.
The relationship between
feminism and non-violence was
a recurrent theme in the
workshop, primarily because,
although the workshop was
open to men, only two actually
participated.
Non-violence is logical
because it is the natural state of
the universe, Bryan said. Nature
is not the result of conflict but of
harmony, she said, adding that
this harmony is important to
remember in the dark days
ahead.
“We go now through the
dark place,” Bryan said during
the meditation session, “but we
do not go through it alone and
not without our knowledge of
the dark.’.’
