    Set sail for study
and adventure on
a Boating campus
Do exotic ports in faraway places
sound like an enticing break from every
day Oregon rain?
Does it also seem an unlikely con
sideration for the student trying to get
through school as quickly as possible?
Semester-at-Sea, a study-abroad pro
gram based on the “floating campus” of
the U.S.S. Universe, enables students to
travel while going to school.
Twice each year, the ship sails on a
100-day voyage for Japan, Korea,
Taiwan, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, India,
Egypt, Turkey, Greece and Spain.
The program offers a broad-based
liberal arts program with more than 60
courses emphasizing world problems.
Typically, a student takes four courses
for a total of 12 hours. Academic credit is
earned through the University of Pitt
sburgh and transferred to home
campuses.
Students spend equal amounts of time
aboard ship and in the various ports of
call, exploring the history, culture,
government and customs of each coun
try. Classes meet only while at sea and
each port visit lasts from three to seven
days.
The U.S.S. Universe is equipped with
classrooms, a bookstore, a student
union, a library, a theatre and a gym. A
spokesperson for the program described
the set-up as the “best way to take a col
lege campus around the world.”
The program is not without a high
pricetag, however. One term costs
$8,900, including both room and board,
passage and tuition. Any full-time stu
dent with a 2.5 or better grade point
average is eligible to apply.
Applications are still being accepted
for spring term 1985. Information is
available by calling (800) 854-0195 or

sburgh. PA, 15260.
