Oregon blasts OSU again
By Brent De La Paz
Of the Emerald
In a football game where the
weather and referees were caus
ing havoc, the Oregon Ducks
didn’t let either one bother
them as they thumped Oregon
State University, 31-6 in Parker
Stadium at Corvallis to continue
mastery of the state rivalry bet
ween the two schools.
Coming into the game.
Oregon hadn't lost a football
game to OSU since 1974, and
Saturday’s 88th meeting was a
contest of varying programs and
coaches, but the end result was
still the same — a victory for the
Ducks, 3-5 in the Pac-10, before
an estimated 39,000 rain-soaked
, fans.
The victory was Oregon’s
10th in eleven years, the only
blemish in the streak was last
year’s inglorious 0-0 tie at
Autzen Stadium. The Ducks,
6-5, ended the season with a
winning record, coach Rich
Brooks’ first since 1980.
For the Beavers, 2-9, the con
test probably marked the end of
Joe Avezzano’s coaching career
at Corvallis. Avezzano, who is
in his last year of a five-year
contract, tasted his 47th defeat
against only six wins and two
ties as head coach of the OSU
football program. For a time
Saturday, it looked like Avez
zano and his Black Bandits from
Benton County could play with
the Ducks — thanks to some un
timely penalties against the
Ducks which called back two
Oregon touchdowns early in the
game.
“We were shaky early,” said
Brooks who extended his
unbeaten streak as a coach and a
player (15-0-2) in the Civil War
series. The Ducks’ problems
with the penalty markers wiped
out what would have been a
21-6 Duck lead going into inter
mission. As it was, Oregon was
ahead only by 7-6 after OSU
kicker Jim Nielsen booted his
second field goal of the day, a
54-yarder, with four seconds
left before halftime.
OSU, 1-7 in the Pac-10, also
had the momentum early in the
third quarter after Beaver cor
nerback Kenny Taylor blocked
Matt MacLeod’s 40-yard field
goal. However, Oregon’s
defense rose to the occasion and
the offense unloaded 14 third
quarter points with a two-tight
end formation to keep OSU’s
winless streak intact.
“The way we started, I think
our players got the impression it
was going to be easy and it cer
tainly wasn’t,” said Brooks
after seeing Oregon score early
in the first quarter when
tailback Tony Cherry scored the
first of two TDs, a five-yard run,
to give the Ducks an early 7-0
lead.
Things tightened up con
siderably after Oregon was
denied two touchdowns
because of penalties, a Lew
Barnes 41-yard reverse TD run a
Cherry 18-yard TD run which
were both called back.
“It was frustrating early with
two touchdowns called back on
the same drive,” Brooks said.
“It really hurt when we didn’t
get anything on that drive.”
Taylor’s block of the
MacLeod’s field goal in the
third quarter could have led to a
touchdown as the cornerback
had clear sailing down the
sidelines, but the ball bounced
away allowing OSU a recovery
but not a TD.
TheDucks regained the ball
when OSU punter David Brun
dage fumbled the snap on the
punt and completed a
fourth-down pass to Michael
Lopez. However, the catch was
short of the first down and OSU
had an illegal man downfield
penalty. The penalty meant a
loss of a down and the Ducks'
ball on the OSU 23. Five plays
later, Alex Mack ran for a 5-yard
TD. MacLeod's point after gave
Oregon breathing room at 14-6.
uau ri^t?ivt?u a cusuy penalty
on the ensuing drive. The
Beavers tried a flea-flicker play
with McKittrick lateraling to
Reggie Hawkins who tossed to a
leaping Reggie Bynum for an
apparent 78-yeard touchdown.
But the play was called back
because of an illegal motion
penalty.
the Beavers and gave Oregon a
chance to close the door one
sided Civil War Series. Barnes
had another TD called back, a
43-yard punt return, but the
Ducks scored anyway seven
plays later when Oregon
quarterback Chris Miller hit
tight end Rich Gaiser for a
6-yard touchdown, putting the
Ducks in solid command, 21-6
late in the third period.
“At 21-6, it became a real pro
blem for our team to think that
they could come back,” Avez
zano said.
Oregon's defense wouldn’t
allow the Beavers to get un
tracked as they blitzed effective
ly all day for six quarterback
sacks. The defense also shut
down the OSU offense to minus
13 yards in the second half and
one first down.
The Ducks added two more
scores to close out the win for
the bragging rights for the state
of Oregon, a 24-yard MacLeod
field goal and a Cherry 51-yard
run for the final score in the
31-6 rout of the Beavers. Cherry
ended the game with 113 yards
rushing on eight carries and two
touchdowns.
“I think OSU saying they
were better than us kind of
bothered us,” said Miller whose
mobility neutralized the OSU
pass rush and solidfied the
pretense that the Beavers will
have a new football coach.
