Dale Gene Crawford, 27, a University freshman was ap prehended in Science I after police were informed that a rifle was discovered in the trunk of a car rented by Crawford. An employee of Rent-A Volks, Inc., a local car rental agency, notified police after he found a Ruger Mini-14, a .223 caliber semi-automatic rifle of the same make as one used in a sniping incident at Autzen Stadium Monday, in the trunk of an automobile that Crawford reportedly had rented. The employee found the rifle while cleaning the car, which had been repossessed from the University campus earlier in the day. Three loaded clips of .223 caliber ammunition and an un disclosed amount of .45 caliber pistol ammunition also were found in the trunk of the car ac cording to Sgt. Chuck Tilby of the Eugene Police Department. After searching Crawford, police found a .45 caliber pistol, and further investigation led to forgery charges by the Oregon State Police, Tilby said. The same type of rifle was one of the weapons used by Michael Feher when he fired dozens of shots from Autzen Stadium on Monday. A former Olympic sprinter was killed and a University wrestler injured in that incident before Feher turn ed the gun on himself and com mitted suicide. There is no apparent connec tion to the sniper incident that occurred on Monday,” Tilby said. “They are separate, isolated incidents.” Crawford will be lodged in Lane County jail until his ar raignment this afternoon in Lane Country District Court.
