Filipino educator to speak Irene Santiago, an educator, journalist and community organizer from the Philippines, will discuss “Justice: The Philippines in the 80s” tonight at 7 in the Alumni Lounge in Gerlinger Hall. Santiago works with low income Moslem women on the island of Mindanao, organizing community groups and educating women on health care, cooperatives and legal rights. She is one of the founders of Philipina, a na tional women's organization. and is the group’s coordinator for the Mindanao region. She is also active in Citizens for Human Rights and Social Transformation, the Coalition of Organizations for the Restora tion of Democracy in Davao Ci ty, and in the consumer educa tion committee of the Con sumer’s Movement of Davao. A journalist with a master's degree from Columbia Universi ty, Santiago edits the Asian Women’s Research and Action Network’s newsletter. Before 1972, she edited a community Macintosh Lab opened for C.A.T.C.H. program The University, through the College of Business Administra tion, will open its doors and computer terminals today to of fer 10 juvenile offenders hands on experience in that school's Macintosh Lab. Operating through the community-based Community Alternative to Commitment Hazard — or C.A.T.C.H. — and sponsored by the business school and the Continuation Center, the program will give the boys and girls ages 14 to 19 two hour's worth of experience with computer graphics and word processing. This is the se cond year of the program. Randy Hiller, of the C.A.T.C.H. program, says his program offers an alternative to the state's two juvenile institu tions. MacLaren School in Woodburn and Hillcrest School of Oregon in Salem. Hiller says the program is cost-effective, saving the state the $2,000 a month it costs to house a juvenile offender in one of the detention institutions. C.A.T.C.H., which has had a 73 percent rate in keeping prior offenders away from criminal referrals in its three years of operation, acts as a linkage bet ween the community and the of fender, helping the juvenile find work and succeed in school, he says. Today, the University will be a part of this linkage, Hiller says, introducing kids to com puters and helping them build some basic skills. The workshop will be in Room 310 Gilbert Hall where the Macintosh Lab is located. The program will operate bet ween 4 and 6 p.m. —.ead THE emerald Hedda QaSler, NOVEMBER 15, 16,17.29.30 & DECEMBER 1 ROBINSON THEATRE 8:00 pm FOR TICKETS AND INFORMATION CALL 686-4191 newspaper that was closed down when martial law was imposed.
