Other Cascade routes that
often are rendered hazardous by
snow and ice include:
•Interstate 84 through the
Columbia Gorge between
Portland and The Dalles.
•The Mount Hood Loop (U.S.
26 and Oregon 35) between San
dy and Hood River, and U.S. 26
between Government Camp and
Prineville.
•Oregon 22 between Salem
and the Santiam Pass.
•Oregon 126 between Sisters
and Prineville.
• The North Umpqua
Highway (Oregon 138) between
Roseburg and Crater Lake Na
tional Park.
•The Lake of the Woods
Highway (Oregon 140) and
Oregon 66 between the
Medford-Ashland area and
Klamath Falls.
Interstate 5 contains three ma
jor winter trouble spots, located
at the Canyon Creek and Sexton
Mountain passes between
Roseburg and Grants Pass; and
through the Siskiyou Moun
tains between Ashland and Red
ding, Calif.
Virtually all highways in Cen
tral and Eastern Oregon can be
considered potentially
dangerous during the winter.
The most heavily-traveled
routes include:
•Interstate 84 — Most key
trouble spots outside of the Col
umbia Gorge are found along
this route in northeastern
Oregon, from Pendleton east
through La Grande and Baker to
the Idaho border.
•U.S. 97 between the Colum
bia River and the California
border.
• U.S. 26 between Prineville
and Vale.
•U.S. 20 between Bend and
Ontario.
•Oregon 39. California 139
and U.S. 395 between Klamath
Falls and Reno, Nev.
Coast Range routes are not as
susceptible to ice and snow as
the high mountain roads, but
wind, rain and numerous
worm-like curves often throw a
"curve” into a holiday drive to
the beach.

ty and Mapleton; Oregon 38 bet

"hotline” for up-to-date winter

tions all air frequent winter road
advisories.
