Windsurfing: wet and wild fun •‘Catch a wave and you’re sittin’ on top of the world...” goes the song by the Beach Boys that was gospel to those Southern Californians in the 1960s that turned the sport of surfing into sun and fun hysteria. Well, it’s 20 years later now and while the song still fits, the sport has evolved into something new. Windsurfing, or sailboarding, has become the sport of the thrill oriented 1980s. Sailboarding is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States today, with hundreds of the sports enthusiasts indulging in their habit here in Oregon. The elusive appeal of gliding ef fortlessly and gracefully across the water in what can be called a sailboat for one has lured all of these people into giving sailboarding a try. The sailboard was born 15 years ago in an aeronautical engineer’s garage in Santa Monica, California. Sailor-engineer John Drake and surfer-computer expert Hoyle Schweitzer mounted a sail onto a surfboard to create what became the first Windsurfer-brand sailboard. While the sailboard itself has changed significantly since the early days, the gusto with which the sport is attempted has remained the same. "It’s like an addiction,” University senior Will Brady explains. "The more you do it, the more you want to do it." And Brady and fellow University senior Jack Rush do it a lot. These two transplanted Californians are perhaps the University’s most dedicated sailboard en thusiasts. Four out of five Fridays will find Brady and Kush packing up for a weekend at one of Oregon’s prime sailboarding locales. Bandon and Newport are two of their favorite spots. “We go up and down the coast looking for waves. . .there’s always somewhere good,” Brady says. He attributes the great windsurfing conditions on the Oregon coast to strong nor therly winds. Both men started windsurfing after becom ing established surfers. Brady went through high school in Palos Verdes “with a bunch of friends going surfing before breakfast, after lunch...whenever we could,” Brady notes. He worked in a boatyard and it was in 1979 that he discovered his first sailboard. "A friend had an old stock Windsurfer and 1 went out into Hurricane Gultch in San Pedro. I learned by myself because not many people were doing it then,” Brady said. Brady wanted more, so he sold his sailboat and bought a sailboard. Unfortunately, the one he bought was not meant for ocean surf. “I took it out. the third or fourth day and broke everything... ripped the sail, broke the boom. . .everything.” Brady has since learned much about the sport through his exploits along the Oregon and California coasts. He is a certified windsurfing instructor now and teaches through Southbay Windsurfing in San Pedro, lie and Rush also make their own boards and Brady serves as the Oregon representative for Streamline Sports of San Pedro. Performance and speed vary with the con struction and design of different boards. Boards 12 feet, 6 inches and above are called “uphaulers.” To begin moving on this par ticular kind, the rider leans over and yanks on a line to upright the board. With a shorter board, the rider lies on the water, beneath the sail, pointing towards the wind. The wind then lifts the sail and sucks up the rider to begin moving. Short boards are faster than long boards but they require more skill to operate. When riding, one either sails quickly or sinks quickly on a short board. There is nothing in between. Forever in search of the perfect wave, Brady and Rush attended the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology in Charleston last spring. Brady said it was great because the institute is within sight of the surf. “Windsurfing seven days a week; it’s just like home,” he remarked. While both men would like to continue their beach bum ways in the future, Rush will graduate this year and move out into the work ing world. Brady, however, is questioning his market value in the real world. “I started work ing at a regular job this past summer,” he said, “but I bailed on it after two days and went back to four-hour days at the windsurfing shop.” Story by Kirsten Bolin Photos by Michael Clapp Developed over 15 years ago, windsurfing is one of the fastest growing sports in America today. Sail size and board length alter the performance of a sailboard. Short boards move faster than long boards but are more difficult to control.
