regional State college enrollment falls From the Associated Press Enrollment at Oregon’s eight public colleges and universities exceeds the forecast, but is still down slightly from last year, ac cording to fourth-week statistics. Shrinking high school graduating classes and Oregon’s continued economic slump are being blamed for similar enrollment declines this year at most of the state’s com munity colleges. After a month of classes, total enrollment at the eight colleges and universities stands at 58,740, four-tenths of a percent below the same point last year. Officials had predicted a 1.5 percent drop. Western Oregon State College had a 12.3 percent increase, followed by the University at 1.6 percent and Southern Oregon State College at 0.1 percent. Enrollment fell at the other five schools. The Oregon Health Sciences University is down the most at 4.5 percent, followed by the Oregon Institute of Technology and Oregon State University at 3.1 percent. Eastern Oregon State College declined 3 per cent and Portland State University fell six-tenths of a percent. The University of Oregon, with 15,749 students, is the largest state university. Oregon State University is second at 15,624 and PSU third at 14,749. Figures show SOSC at 4,281, WOSC at 2,882, OIT at 2,615, EOSC at 1,508 and OHSU at 1,185. The fall’s fourth week, which ended Oct. 19, is the official census data used for reporting enrollment figures, according to Susan Weeks of the State System of Higher Education. Figures also showed that full time-equivalent enrollment is down 9 percent at Lane Com munity College in Eugene. “Enrollment, although down, is not an indication of impending doom,” said Jack Carter, LCC vice president for student services. “Enrollment is related to population, the economy and so forth. It is somewhat predictable and the information we have about the population of our area indicates it would tend to level off.” At LCC, administrators have cut low-enrollment courses and combined classes. They’ve hired fewer instructors to offset a steeper-than-expected enroll ment drop of about 9 percent.
