Spikers go on the road for Fresno contest By Robert Collias Of the Emerald The Oregon volleyball team returns to action this weekend with three matches against an assortment of opponents. The Ducks start their weekend with a NorPac conference match against Fresno State University tonight at 7:30 p.m at Fresno. Saturday night the Ducks continue their California trip with a match against University of Cal State-Bakersfield, a NCAA Division II school. The Ducks finish the weekend by returning home to host the People’s Republic of China in match scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at McArthur Court. Oregon coach Chris Voelz is concentrating on Friday’s match against the Bulldogs of Fresno State. “The match is important because it is a con ference match and they have been playing well lately,” says Voelz of FSU. The Ducks, 16-7, have been playing well after winning the past 11 of 12 matches. Volez’s crew had a 10-match win streak snapped by San Jose State Universiy last Friday, but got right back on the winning track last Saturday with an easy win over Santa Clara University. The Ducks, ranked 13th in the latest NCAA poll, are behind FSU in the NorPac standings. The Bulldogs, 15-6 overall, are 5-1 in league while the Ducks are a notch below at 4-1. “They’ve played more conference matches than we have and have been winning impressive ly,” says Voelz. The Bulldogs are off to their best start since 1976. In FSU’s last NorPac action, the Bulldogs knocked off the University of San Francisco in three games and took the University of California Photo by Brian Krb Teri Kramer (8) will be a key participant when the Ducks travel to California for an important NorPac Conference volleyball match against Fresno State University tonight. in four games. The Bulldogs are led by senior Ruth Lawan son who operates from the Bulldog's complicated 6-2 offense. “Lawanson can do a lot on the floor.” says Volez. “She sets, digs and leads them in kills.” Lawanson has 229 kills, 34 service aces, and 300 assists. She is bolstered on the Bulldog frontline by Barbie Snyder, a 6-foot-4-inch junior who has 188 kills. Voelz thinks playing on FSU’s homecourt will be a test for the Ducks. "They have a small gym and their fans get rowdy,” says Voelz. Oregon will play the Roadrunners of Cal State-Bakersfield on Saturday. “It is kind of a no-win situation for us,” says Voelz. “They have everything to gain in defeating us, and we are expected to beat them." The Roadrunners are ranked in the Top Ten for Division 11 teams and are led by UCLA transfer Coleen Koop. “We tried to recruit Koop out of high school, but we lost out to UCLA,” says Voelz. "She is a very talented player who can be very effective from the outside.” Fresno State beat Bakersfield in four games earlier this season. “We should be able to get an idea of how tough they really are after we play Fresno,” says Voelz. The Ducks return home Sunday for a 7:30 p.m. exhibition match against a national team from the People’s Republic of China at Mac Court. “1 think the international flavor will add a lot to the match.” says Voelz.
