The group, which is one of America’s most popular punk bands, will perform at WOW Hall Wednesday. “We’re not playing up to the conformist end at all,” said Biafra. of the band’s musical approach. “There’s a good chunk of the con formist punk scene that dearly wishes we would go away. “A lot of buffoons are going around waving American flags like they’re some sort of cornball patriots,” said Biafra. “But we think we love this country more than they do, because we believe in the values it was founded on — the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. We’ll fight people tooth and nail who want to take it away from us.” The Dead Kennedys formed in San Francisco in 1978. The band rocketed to national attention through punk circles in 1980. ’ when they released their now classic debut album. “Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables.” They have since released three more albums, including the 1983 “Plastic Surgery Disaster.” in addition to several singles and EPs. In 1979 when the Dead Ken nedy* first began to break into the music scene. Los Angeles’ Slash Magazine called the band "... more than the '80’s answer to Country Joe and the Fish. In fact, they might be one of the more im portant bands to come out of this scene." In a recently released Dead Ken nedys biography, author Marian Kcster attempted to explain a part of one of the band's concerts: "Biafra hectors the crowd with their ignorance of history." she writes, "exhorting them to resist racist fascism and fascist racism; meanwhile, he dictates absolutely from the stage, secure like all dic tators in his ability to arouse our atavisms and possess us through them. "it's simply impossible that the Dead Kennedys’ spirit won’t end up affecting quite a few kids even as it tears in one ear and out the other.” Kesteradds. "And some of their music will prove pretty hard to forget, too." Tickets for Wednesday’s show are $7. and are available at Karth River Records, the House of Records, Diana's, the EMU Main Desk and the WOW Hall office. The Portland-based Wipers will open the show along with Eugene's E*13 and special guests from I .os Angeles. The concert is produced by Northwest Concerts.
