Of the Kmerald Oregon football coach Rich Brooks summed up Saturday's loss to the University of Southern California as "a lesson in playing give away.” The lesson was an expensive one as the Ducks dropped a 19-9 heartbreaker to LJSC before 29,581 people at Autzen Stadium. The Ducks had many chances to win. but it was a key play at the wrong time and the wrong place which spelled doom for Oregon as they dropped to 1-2 in the Pacific 10 football race. Trojan kicker Steve Jordan, not tailback Fred Crutcher, was the star of IJSC’s offense. Jordan hit four of five field goals to pro vide enough offense to send USC back to California with a 3-0 conference record. “It was certainly a strange game,” said Brooks who saw his team turn the ball over on four occasions. The turnovers and a big penalty that nullified an Oregon touchdown proved to be costly for the Ducks. Oregon’s troubles began when quarterback Chris Miller hit flanker Lew Barnes across the middle for an apparent 37-yard touchdown strike in the first quarter. The touchdown was brought back because Oregon was flagged for an il legal receiver downfield. ‘It was a very suprising call.” said Brooks of the penalty against Oregon offensive guard Craig Kaylor. After the penalty. Oregon lost momentum when USC] strong safety Tim McDonald blocked Dean Otto’s 52-yard field goal. USC All-America linebacker jack Del Kio recovered the ball and ran it to the Ducks’ 41. “That is only the second one we’ve had blocked in eight years.” said brooks. USC took full advantage of the miscue as the Trojans scored six plays later with tailback Crutcher sweeping over the right for a touchdown. Jordan’s extra point w'as good and USC jumped ahead 7-0 with 9:25 left in the first stanza. It was a lead the Trojans would never relinquish. Ixiter, Jordan hit his first field goal of the day, a 44-yarder, to lengthen the lead to 10-0. Jor dan’s boot was set up by a bad snap on an Oregon punt. Oregon closed the gap at 10-6 with a Miller-to-Kevin McCall 15-yard screen pass. . Unfor tunately. that would be Oregon’s only touchdown of the day. “The effort was there, but the execution and mental errors killed us,” said Brooks. The Trojans added another . Jordan field goal. 26 yards, to go into halftime leading 13-6-. Oregon’s defense shut down the Trojans’ offense'for the most. * part in the second half, allow ing Jordan two more field goals, field goals. However, the Ducks” offense never got un tracked against USC’s defense. “I thought our defense played a helluva football game." said Brooks. "It gave our offense op portunites. particulars in the third quarter to get back in the game, but we didn’t take full advantage of them.” Continued on Page 13 Trail Blazers come to town Although the football season is just starting to get into full swing, it's time to start thinking about basketball season already as the Portland Trail Blazers come into McArthur Court for a 7:30 p.m. pre-season match-up against the Los Angeles Clippers.
