Oregon's top-rated women’s
cross-country team invades
Madison, Wis., Saturday for the
Wisconsin-Burger King Invita
tional. The meet will determine
how the Ducks rank against
some of nation's best cross
country teams.
The University of Wisconsin,
ranked number two behind
Oregon in the NCAA cross
country polls, will be the host
team.
“They’ll (Wisconsin) be the
biggest challenge so far," says
senior Ranza Clark who will be
one of seven Ducks to make the
trip to the Midwest.
Saturday’s field will feature
No. 6 Brigham Young, No. 8
Iowa State and No. 11 Kansas
State. Also expected to perform
strongly is Florida, ranked
ninth in the nation, a team
Oregon coach Tom Heinonen
figures may be the “sleeper" of
this year’s Invitational.
“They are billing this race as
the ‘mini-nationals.’** says
Heinonen. “Six of the teams are
ranked in the top eleven. Half of
last year’s top finishers from the
NCAA Championship race will
be there, including seven of the
top ten individual finishers.”
Included among those
returnees is Oregon senior,
Kathy Hayes, who placed third
in last year’s national cham
pionship race. Hayes was nam
ed NorPac Conference Athlete
of the Week for her performance
last Saturday in the Willamette
Invitational.
Series goes
to Motown
DETROIT (AP) — The San
Diego Padres keep getting out of
jams largely because of a
bullpen that knows how to
handcuff hitters.
And the Detroit Tigers are
happy to get out of California.
The Padres, who tied the
World Series at one game
apiece, worked out at Tiger
Stadium Thursday, an off day,
in preparation for Friday night’s
Game Three (5:35 p.m. PDT).
Right-hander Milt Wilcox of the
Tigers will face left-hander Tim
Lollar of the Padres.
Games Four and Five will be
held here Saturday and Sunday
and, if necessary, the final two
games of the best-of-seven
Series would return to San
Diego Tuesday and Wednesday
nights.
Kurt Bevacqua, whose
baserunning blunder may have
cost the Padres a run in their 3-2
loss in Game One, had the
game-winning hit Wednesday
night, a three-run homer in the
fifth inning that erased a 3-2
Detroit lead.
“We jumped out to an early
lead, but they showed a lot of
character.” said Kirk Gibson,
MVP of Detroit’s three-game
sweep of Kansas City in the
American League playoffs.
’’They’ve come back
throughout postseason play,
and they just did it again. But
we’ve got a good feeling about
coming home 1-1.”
Darrell Evans said he was not
satisfied with the split in San
Diego, “but we’ve played well
in Detroit all season long.”
The Padres trailed Chicago
0-2 in the best-of-five National
League playoffs before rallying
with three straight victories in
an unprecedented comeback to
win their first pennant.
‘‘Kathy is way ahead of where
she was last year,” says
Heinonen.
The Ducks’ seven-member
team to run in Wisconsin was
determined by the results of the
Oct. 6 Willamette competition
in Salem. Oregon will send
Hayes, Kim Roth, Claudette
Croenendaal, Gretchen Nelson,
Birgit Petersen, Ranza Clark,
and Lisa Johnson.
According to Heinonen, both
the Ducks and the Badgers of
Wisconsin have excellent one
two combinations. The Ducks
f
have Hayes and junior Kim
Roth, who finished 27th at last
year’s NCAA’s. The Badgers
feature Cathy Branta and Katie
Ishmael who finished sixth and
18th respectively in last year’s
NCAAs.
The Ducks won’t have to
worry about being overconfi
dent Saturday, but the lack of
competition in the early meets
may have some effect on the
team’s performance.
“It’s important for the team to
win over some good competi
tion,” says Hayes who is an ear
ly favorite in the race.
’’You have to jump in some
time,” says Heinonen in
reference to the Ducks’ most dif
ficult meet this season.
Wisconsin will be up for the
meet because“the Badgers are
having homecoming weekend.
The meet has been heavily pro
moted in Wisconsin. And the
Badgers’ familiarity with their
home course can only help
them.
The Ducks head to Madison
rated number one. but Clark
sees no added pressure because
of the rating.
'"We look at our number one
position as a confidence
builder. rather than as pressure
on the team,” says Clark.
The men’s team will also be
in action this weekend. Coach
Bill Dellinger’s Ducks will be
racing in the Tokatee Invita
tional in Blue River this Satur
day. Chris Hamilton and John
Zishka lead the Ducks into the
meet which will determine who
will particpate in the Pac-10
men’s cross country race in late
October.

To every roommate
about to become a friend.
Right now, about the only thing you have in
common is the same room. But you and those
strangers who moved in with you are going to
crack a lot of books and bum a lot of mid
night oil together.
You’re going to discover the people
behind the name tags, the ones in
side the roommates. And who
knows? Before the term is
over, your roommates may
very well turn out to be good
friends.
To each of you we say, let
it be Lowenbrau.
Lowenbrau. Here’s to good friends.
