With the University of
Southern California rosters
reading like the Who’s Who of
football superstardom over the
last 13 years, it’s no wonder the
Oregon football team hasn’t
beaten the Trojans since 1971.
Saturday at Autzen Stadium,
the Ducks will try to break the
13-year Trojan hex as the two
teams square off in a 3:50 p.m.
contest. The starting time of the
game was changed "from the
regular 1 p.m. kick-off to ac
comodate television coverage
on the Metrosports network.
The Ducks sport a 1-1 Pac-10
record after losing to the
University of Arizona last
weekend, 28-14. Southern Cal,
3-1 overall, is coming into
Eugene after slipping past
Washington State, 29-27, to put
USC 2-0 in conference.
“Every conference game is a
pivotal game if you want to be
part of the conference race,”
says Oregon coach Rich Brooks.
“We’re 1-1, another lose, for all
intents and purposes, takes us
out of the conference race.”
The Ducks’ injury report isn’t
good. Listed as questionable for

the contest are linebackers Lerry
Wilson and Dan Devaney, safety
Doug Judge and guard Ray
Wheatley who were all injured
in Tucson. Cornerbacks Ed
Hulbert and Anthony Newman,
defensive tackle David Culp and
linebacker E.J. Duffy also sus
tained injuries in practice this
week.
“We’re very thin in the
secondary, and it’s not good to
be injured like we are back
there,” says Brooks who may
have lost starting safety Jeff
Williams for the season.
“I believe we would be a lot
better if we had our regular
starters in there because we
don’t have the depth or the ex
perience to afford these in
juries.” says Brooks.
Traditionally, USC has field
ed a great tailback to follow the,
Trojan’s Student Body Right
and Left formations. Junior Fred
Crutcher will be the tailback to
follow the Trojans’ sweep
plays.
Last week, Crutcher amassed
a 171 yards in 37 carries in
USC’s victory over WSU while
Oregon ended its storybook
start with its first loss of the
season against Arizona.
Although Crutcher ranks 14th
in the nation in rushing, averag
ing 109.7 yards per game, USC
coach Ted Tollner is not quick
to label him the next Heisman
Trophy winner. Tollner feels
Crutcher is “back healthy again
and playing at his full
capabilities.”
While Crutcher may need
time to find his niche as a great
USC tailback, the Trojan
frontline is just the supporting
cast he needs for the added con
fidence. From tackle to tackle,
the USC linemen outweigh
Oregon’s offensive line by an
average of 13 pounds. 268 to
255. The game marks as a
homecoming for USC tackle
}ames Fitzpatrick from Beaver
ton whose brother is Oregon
freshman Devin Fitzpatrick.
“The thing that makes them
great is that they get the great
tailback.” says Oregon offen
sive coordinator Bob Toledo,
“but the thing that people
overlook sometimes is that their
offensive linemen dominate the
line of scrimmage. I mean. I’d
have a chance to win the
Heisman running behind their
line.”
While the Trojan running
game appears to be progressng
each week, Oregon’s backfield
may once again find the runn
ing tough. The Ducks managed
only 37 yards rushing against
Arizona which fielded the
number one Pac-10 rushing
defense. It doesn’t get any
easier this Saturday because the
Trojans are ranked right behind

Oregon tailback Kevin McCall (42) will need more big blocking
efforts like Kevin Wilhite’s (1) as the Ducks meet a stingy
University of Southern California defense at Autzen Stadium
Saturday.
Arizona in allowing the run.
"We’re just trying to go back
to basics and see if we can
establsih the run again. We
couldn’t run it against Arizona
and that was a major factor in
our defeat,” says Brooks.
All America candidate
linebacker Jack Dei Rio will lead
the USC defense. The Trojans
rushing defense is ranked
seventh in the nation, so
Oregon's running game will
need to play a key role in the
game.
Duck spikers prepare for Spartan contest
By Robert Collias
Of the Emerald
Sometimes the big ones get
away, but Oregon volleyball
coach Chris Volez doesn’t in
tend to let that happen tonight.
The Ducks , 15-6, face 14th
ranked San Jose State Universi
ty, 10-5, at 7:30 p.m. in McAr
thur Court to possibly decide
who will win the NorPac Con
ference Championship this
year.
“I think that we are the top
two teams in the conference,
but that doesn’t mean we can
overlook other teams like Santa
Clara and Fresno State,” says
Voelz whose team will tackle
the University of Santa Clara on
Saturday in Mac Court at 8 p.m.
The Ducks, 3-0 in NorPac
play, beat the Spartans in a hard
fought five-game match last
year. The win placed Oregon
fourth in the NorPac and
vaulted them into the con
ference playoffs. The Spartans
were forced to settle for fifth
place. *
However, when NCAA tour
nament time came, the Ducks
were passed over while the
Spartans recieved an invitation
to post-season play.
Voelz says that that fact does
not add extra pressure this time.
“We have built-in respect for
San Jose State,’’ says Voelz. “In
the NCAA poll we are ranked
12th and they are ranked 14th,
there is not much difference in
teams of that caliber.”
Voelz says last year’s disap
pointment does not come play
when her team matches against
the Spartans who sport a 5-0
mark in league competition.
“I don’t believe in grudge
matches, besides half of my
team wasn't even here last
year,” says Voelz. “1 think this
match will be a good one
because both teams are tough
this year.”
Voelz noted that the match
may have extra importance
because of the fact that the
regular season champion in the
NorPac will have the right to
host the conference playoffs.
The winner of the NorPac tour
nament will receive an
automatic NCAA berth.
‘‘The NCAA berth is our
overall goal this season, ’ says
Voelz.
SJSU is led by Linda Fournet.
Fournet, an outside hitter, leads
the team in kills with 161 in 15
matches. Setter Teri DeBusk is
the floor general for the Spar
tans’ 5-1 offense.
"They have lots of strong hit
ters so we will have to play
good, strong defense,” says
Oregon's All America candidate
Sue Harbour.
"I think we will have plenty
of incentive just because they
are ranked number one in the
conference and we are ranked
number two," says hitter Teri
Kramer.
The Ducks will be bolstered
by the return of outside hitter
Cynthia Shepherd, who is retur
ning from a broken finger.
