Friday Edition how-to: T-shirts
Wearing a custom-made T
shirt is a great way to advertise
your trip to Hawaii (or your
parents’ trip) or your political
beliefs (or lack thereof).
Custom-made shirts aren’t
cheap, however, and very often
they make one feel “mass
produced.”
Don’t fret. There is an easy
escape from dull conformity:
making your own T-shirt. The
materials are cheap and the
possibilities for creativity are
endless.
The first thing you need is a
shirt. Plain, white, cotton T
shirts can be bought for about
$6 at department stores such as
J.C. Penny’s, Woolworth’s,
Newberry’s and Sears.
Ask your friends if they have
any old shirts they don’t want
anymore, or search your own
closet. Chances are good that
there is probably at least one
old, forgotten T-shirt in the
back corner that’s just waiting
to be rejuvenated.
Your next purchase will be
paint. Cole’s Art Supply,
Oregon Art Supply and the
University Bookstore all carry
fabric paints which come in an
assortment of regular and
metallic colors. Small jars cost
$1.50 to $2. If you’re feeling
very inspired, you can buy the
larger size for $5.50.
Small brushes will be needed
for fine details, and spray paints
work well for large, air
brush designs and personalized
graffiti. You can buy stencils or
make them yourself. They are
especially helpful for printing
initials, names, slogans or
Greek letters.
The “splatter and dribble”
technique, currently popular on
those expensive designer T
shirts, is very easy to do
yourself. All kinds of “painting
implements” can be used to
create the designs: chopsticks,
toothbrushes and fingers all
work well.
Silkscreen prints can be made
with a wire screen and a
toothbrush. Position a stencil
on the T-shirt, hold the screen
over it and scrape the
toothbrush across to evenly
distribute the paint.
Remember making potato
print pictures in third grade?
These look great on fabric as
well, and as far as materials go
this method is just about the
most inexpensive. Designs and
patterns can also be carved on
apples, styrofoam, cork and
woodblocks.
Hands, toes, thumbs and
noses may also be tried — with
caution.
Absolutely any kind of design
can look good on a T-shirt, but
here are some suggestions:
psychedelic patterns of rainbow
colors (if you're in that kind of
mood), your favorite character
