Police suspect more than ar
son occurred Friday in a Straub
Hall fire that caused at least
$500 damage to a professor’s
office.
Two thefts which occurred in
the PLC and one in Straub Hall
could have been committed by
the same person who started the
fire, according to Sgt. Chuck
Tilby of the Eugene Police
Department.
A man was seen in the fire
area shortly before the blaze, He
is described as a white male, 55
to 60 years old, weighing 160
pounds with short grey or white
hair. He was wearing a light
blue shirt, tan pants and has a
prominent nose, Tilby said.
A man matching the discre

a.m. when the thefts occured
there and about five minutes

With a change in the precep
tion of land rights has come a
fundamental revision of pro
gress, he said.
“Old buildings used to be
taken down and replaced, but
this is no longer the case,” he
said.
Movements in wilderness and
inner-city historic preservation
have helped to bring this
change, but the development of
history taking its course and the
change in public values, pro
gress is now in the light of a
cost-benefit relation, Sax said.
Symbols of our culture can be
found in our national treasures.
Historic preservation outweighs
private, full ownership of pro
perty, Sax said.
Before Sax’s speech, Derrick
Bell, law school dean, paid
tribute to the late George Streis
inger, a University biologist
who died unexpectedly in
August.
