    Netters squash Beavers
By Robert Collias
Of the Emerald
The Oregon volleyball team got a taste of
sweet revenge Saturday night against the Oregon
State Beavers.
The Ducks had not beaten the Beavers since
1980, but Oregon ended the four-year drought
with a four-game thrashing of OSU 15-9, 15-4,
10- 15, and 15-9.
The Ducks showed why they are ranked 13th
in the latest NCAA poll before an enthusiastic
crowd of 1500 at McArthur Court. Oregon
dominated most of the match and sent OSU back
to Corvallis without a win for the first time in four
years.
With the victory the Ducks upped their Nor
Pac conference record to 3-0 and 15-6 overall. In
the process, Oregon set a school record with 10
straight match wins, breaking the record of nine
set in 1980. Ironically, 1980 was the last time the
Ducks had beaten the Beavers who dropped to
11- 7 overall and 2-1 in the NorPac.
Oregon had little trouble with OSU, but
Oregon coach Chris Voelz was less than pleased
with the overall team effort.
"We didn’t execute our game plan very
well,” said Voelz. “In the third game we had a lot
of unforced errors that cost us the game.”
OSU won the third game which was only the
second loss the Ducks have given up in their last
28 games.
“We've been playing very well lately and I’m
pleased that we can play below par and still get a
win, especially against the Beavers,” said Voelz.
The Duck players were in agreement.
“We didn’t play real well, but I think it is a
sign of a good team when you don’t play as well
as possible and still win," said setter Lisa
Gemoya.
Oregon was never headed in the match ex
cept for the loss in the third game. The Ducks
ended the Beaver rally as Oregon jumped to a
13-3 lead in the fourth and final game of the
match.
“We didn’t do exactly what we wanted to,
but to win that way will give us confidence for the
future,” said Oregon’s All-America candidate
Sue Harbour who ended the game with a 17 kills
and nine blocks.
“I think it was our intensity that kept us in
front the whole way,” said sophomore Shaunna
Koenig.
The Ducks take their ten-match win streak
and growing confidence into this weekend with
home contests against San Jose State University
and the University of Santa Clara.
“We’ll need all the confidence and breaks we
can get this weekend,” said Voelz.

16:54.6. Oregon’s Claudette
Groenendaal, Gretchen Nelson,
and Birgit Petersen finished
third, fourth and fifth respec

“Our first seven finishers
were grouped within 1:03,
which is unheard of,” said
Oregon coach Tom Heinonen
who saw his No. 1 ranked team
run an impressive meet.
The results of Saturday’s race
