opinion Is this compassion? I would like to take this op portunity to respond to Karey Tanton’s letter about Reagan’s so-called “compassion.” Criminal justice is one of the most important women's issues in the upcoming election. However, it is only one in a series of issues affecting women’s lives. Since 1980, Reagan’s ad ministration has had devastating social and economic implications for women: 2.5 million women have sunk below the poverty level. Is this compassion? Reagan is the chief opponent of the Equal Rights Amend ment. In a Supreme Court case, Reagan's justice department successfully argued for limiting the use of Title IX. Once again, many schools are free to place quotas on the number of women they will admit and are free to restrict women’s access to cer tain programs of study. Is this compassion? Reagan's position on abortion would deny women the right to make their own decisions regar ding whether, or when, to have children and instead would have the government make that decision for them. If Reagan wins this election, he may have the opportunity to appoint up to five justices to the Supreme Court, a move which could suc ceed in outlawing abortion. Many women will seek illegal abortions and die due to un sanitary conditions. Reagan’s "compassion” obviously does not extend to women. Reagan is the first president in history to force members off the Civil Rights Commission and replace them with people who are pledged to rubber stamp his views. This has blocked civil rights for all minorities — men and women. Is this compassion? Reagan has also made it harder for women to get decent jobs at fair wages. In 1982, women were the sole supporters of more than 9.4 million households. Women still only make 62 cents for every dollar men make. In the 1984 Reagan budget, spending on programs affecting poor families was cut back by $1 million an hour. Women and children have suffered the most because they make up most of the poor population. Nearly 60 percent of children in female headed households live in poverty. Reagan’s compassion obviously does not extend to children either. If Reagan is re-elected, we can expect to lose the Supreme Court as a guardian of justice, vital social programs such as social security, protection against sex discrimination and many other safeguards. Is this compassion? We do not need a president like Reagan to put five more people like him on the Supreme Court. Women who are raped are often made to be the criminals. Raped women who become pregnant will be forced to have the child because abor tion is illegal. Is this compassion? Women need a president who will place judges on the courts who will treat them with more compassion than the criminal. Women also need a justice system that will not deny them their basic civil rights. A Reagan re-election will ensure more appointments of judges who will take away the civil rights of all minorities. And let's not forget his views on higher education. He is con stantly cutting funds for student loans. And he wants to put prayer back in the public schools. He is also in favor of tuition tax breaks for schools that practice racism. Do you call that compassion? These are the main reasons why Reagan should not be re elected. Women, above all, do not need Reagan. By Laura Romano Romano is co-director of the Women's Referral and Resource Service. You can make a BIG DIFFERENCE.
