Oregon fans weren’t saying
"Rose Bowl” after the Ducks
demolished the University of
the Pacific on Saturday, but
some people are beginning to
realize how good the Ducks
really are after they upped their
record to 4-0.
“I felt if we were going to do
anything this year, we should
be 4-0 at this point,” said
Oregon football coach Rich
Brooks on the 30-14 win over
the Tigers at Autzen Stadium on
a sunny afternoon.
4-0 is exactly where the
Ducks stand after they
methodically crunched Pacific
before 28,505 who witnessed
Brooks’ team add another
chapter to their storybook
beginning.
Oregon came into the game
looking for revenge after suffer
ing an embarrassing 21-15
season-opening loss to the
Tigers last year.
"Last year when they beat us,
1 wanted to beat them by a 100
points (this year),” said Oregon
linebacker Todd Welch who led
a defensive charge that shut
down the Tigers’ offense to six
points in the first three quarters.
The Ducks set the tempo of
the game in the first quarter
with a strong running attack led
by tailback Kevin McCall. Mc
Call had 104 yards on the day,
52 of those in the first quarter
alone.
"I think when the defense
came through, that really turn
ed the offense on,” said McCall
of the first scoring drive which
was set up when Ducks’ defense
thwarted a Pacific scoring drive
deep in Oregon territory. The
Tigers helped the cause by
fumbling the snap on a 40-yard
field goal attempt.
Oregon scored on its second
drive of the day when Alex
Mack swept over from five
yeards to give the Ducks a 6-0
lead. Kicker Matt MacLeod add
ed the extra point which gave
the Ducks a 7-0 lead with 3:38
remainin in the first quarter.
