team that is famous for winning
in the second half of the season.
The only problem for WSU is
they must win early this season
or not win all. The Cougars’
schedule isn’t kind. WSU does
have the best runner in the
Pac-10 in Kerry Porter.
Mark Rypien, a local favorite,
will handle the quarterbacking
chores, but it is the depleted
defense which will be the
Cougar’s demise.
8. STANFORD
Things haven’t looked so
good down at the Farm since
since John Elway took his act to
the NFL two years ago. Stan
ford's search for Pac-10 respec
tability stems from another
Elway, Jack, who takes over the
coaching reins in Palo Alto,
The apprentice to Elway's of
fensive magic will be
sophomore signal caller John
Paye who will throw to fleet
footed Emile Harry.
Besides the Paye-Harry show
on Saturdays, Stanford op
ponents will be seeing a lot of
6-6 250-pound defensive end
Garin Veris on the defensive
front.
fclway s team is by no means a
contender for the crown
because of a non-existent runn
ing game. However, the days of
not taking Stanford seriously
are over.
9. OREGON STATE
Pity the poor Beavers. Oregon
State is an avalanche waiting to
happen as beleaguered coach
Joe Avezzano fights for his
coaching life.
Avezzano’s prayers will rest
on shoulders of quarterback
Rickey Greene who will be look
ing for All-Pac-10 wide receiver
Reggie Bynum.
OSU has a seasoned defensive
unit (eight starters back) to com
bat the offenses of the Pac-10.
Avezzano's troops will be im
proved, but the rigors of the
long Pac-10 season will take
their toll.
10. CALIFORNIA
California is the mystery team
of the Pac-10. The Bears could
finish anywhere from the upper
echelon of the conference to
dead last.
The only thing not
mysterious is quarterback Gale
Gilbert who will operate the
"Air Cal” passing machine. Cal
will live — and die by the pass.
Only three starters are back
from a defense which finished
eighth in the league. A defen
sive miracle will be the only
thing that will prevent "Air
Cal" from crash landing in
Berkeley.
