Seven awarded Fulbright grants By Jolayne Houtz Of the Emerald Seven current and former University students have receiv ed Fuibright fellowships to study, teach or conduct research abroad during the 1984-85 school year. They are Susan Lewis, an thropology; Deborah Sergent, English; Christopher Armeniades, Kendall de Bevoise, Laurence DeLooze and Thaddeus Sunseri, history; and Doug Nash, journalism. James Orr, anthropology, is an alter nate for the fellowship. Lewis, a University doctoral degree student, has received a Finnish government grant to study Finnish language, culture and ethnology at the University of Helsinki. Lewis will also con duct research at the Institute of Migration in Turku on the underlying causes and out comes of Finnish immigration as a base for later fieldwork in Oregon among Astoria-area residents of Finnish descent. Sergent, a former University student, will spend the year as a teaching assistant at a high school in West Germany. She was awarded a Fuibright travel grant and a German government teaching assistantship. Armeniades, a June graduate, received a French government teaching assistantship and a Fulbright travel grant to teach at a French high school. De Bevoise, a University doc toral degree student, will use his Fulbright award to conduct research in the Philippines for his dissertation, “The Issue of U.S. Army Misconduct in the Philippines, 1898-1903.” Sunseri, also a doctoral stu dent, will study the history of German imperialism at the University of Bielefeld. He has a Fulbright travel grant and a Ger manistic Society of America award. Nash, a June graduate, was awarded a Fulbright fellowship for a year’s study of German mass communications at the University of Munich. DeLooze, a doctoral degree student at the University of Toronto, will travel to France to conduct research on French medieval history. Fulbright fellowships were awarded to 711 Americans this year, up from 683 last year. Most of the grants provide round-trip transportation, tui tion and maintenance for one academic year.
