17. Applicants must be U.S.
citizens and hold a bachelor’s
degree or its equivalent before
the beginning date of the grant.
In most cases, a written and
spoken proficiency in the
language of the host country is
necessary, as well as a solid
academic record, according to
Thomas Mills, director of Inter
national Services.
Applicants write a one-page
proposal about their course of
study and are interviewed by a
committee of 10 University pro
fessors. The final decision is
made by the Fulbright Selection
Committee in New York, com
posed of interested Americans
and residents of the potential
host country.
“The application process is
fairly straightforward,” says
Orr, an alternate who was one of
13 people applying to Turkey.
Only five were accepted.
The host country makes the
final decision and decides
where the candidate will study,
but the fellowship is funded by
governmental money from both
the U.S. and the host country.
In general, 30 University
students apply, and five to six
are accepted per year, Mills
says.
“This year we have seven
recipients and one alternate.
I’m pleased with the quality of
our students,” Mills says.
Students make a report to the
host country’s Fulbright Com
mission before they leave,
detailing what they have learn
ed and how it will affect their
future careers.
