Big play, defense
stop Cal’s Bears
By Allan Lazo
Or tha Emerald
Look out Lew Barnes, there’s
a new big-play man in this town
— it’s the Ducks’ revamped
defensive unit.
Visibly missing from the first
two games this season,
Oregon’s defense made up for
some lost time Saturday against
the University of California
Golden Bears with three crucial
turnovers which turned the tide
in Oregon’s 21-14 win.
The first two steals from the
Bears were spectacular with
junior Doug judge stopping
California drives of 47 and 63
yards with a fumble recovery
and his first interception of the
year towards the end of the se
cond quarter. However, judge’s
plays would take a back seat to
the biggest defensive play of the
game.
With little over 3:29 left in the
game, a Duck drive stalled deep
in their own territory. Oregon
punted and California took over
in excellent field positon on
their own 46.
On the Bears’ first play from
scrimmage, fullback Ed Barbero
coughed up the football after be
ing hit by sophomore tackle
Dave Maley. When the dust
cleared, sophomore linebacker
Dan Devaney had the pigskin at
the Cal 44, giving the Ducks
new life.
‘‘It couldn’t have come at a
better time,” said a relieved
Maley.
Fitting words for a 14-14
deadlock and time running out.
Five plays later, Lew Barnes
caught Chris Miller's pass for a
touchdown lifting Oregon to the
victory.
“I think the defense is certainly
improved. We're still not where
we want to be, but we’re mak
ing strides towards where we
want to be at the end of the
year,” Judge said, ‘it wasn’t
pretty once again, but I would
rather give up 400 yards and
win, than give up 100 yards and
lose. I guess the end result is the
main thing.”
Although the defense shined
in certain key situations, some
questions still remain as to the
grading of Saturday’s perfor
mance.
A threatening “AirCal” pass
ing attack was held to only 253
yards, the lowest passing yar
dage allowed by the Ducks’
secondary squadron this
season.
But, the bad news was a
usually tough Oregon rushing
defense saw Golden Bear run
ners amass 193 yards on the
ground, the highest total this
season.
While the defense may have
given up less yardage against
the University of Colorado and
Long Beach State University, it
was the big plays that turned
heads Saturdav.
