Barnes c°ntinued fr°m 32 much different from its predecessors. “We made three big plays on defense on a day that we didn’t play that well," said Brooks wno saw Cal quarterback Gale Gilbert lead the Bears to 446 yards in total offense. Safety Doug Judge made the other two defensive gems — a fumble recovery that led to Oregon’s first score and in terception of a Gilbert pass in the end zone to keep the Ducks ahead 14-7 at the half. “It (Judge’s interception) was a key play because even a field goal or whatever at that time would have really hurt our chances of coming out with a victory,” said Brooks. “Having Cal come out of that with no points was a real boost." Besides the defensive heroics, the offensive game continued to grow because of Miller’s quarterbacking savvy. Count less times, the sophomore from Eugene kept the Oregon offense alive with clutch passing and a mobility that hampered Califor nia’s defensive pursuit. "Miller did some outstanding things....” said Brooks of his signal caller who was 12 of 22 passes for 197 yards and one big touchdown at the end. “He made a couple of plays early, one pass to fj.J.) Birden and one to (Kevin) McCall, scrambling out of the pocket just before stepping out of bounds. They kept drives alive and were just great athletic plays." Brooks thought the Cal game was far from over when Barnes caught Miller's pass for the go ahead score. “I was certainly pleased, but I didn't believe the game was over by any stretch because they had two timeouts and could throw the ball,” said Brooks remembering a last-minute loss to Cal two years ago when the Bears drove the field for a 10-7 win with, ironically, — only 53 seconds left. The Ducks’ defense heeded Brooks' fears and put the clamps on Gilbert's aerial show for the game's final act. "We made the plays we had to make,” said Brooks. “That is the key to a team that has a lot of confidence in itself.” Confidence is something this Duck team is not lacking. Just ask Cal.
