More importantly, the Ducks
remained undefeated, 3-0, and
the win was Oregon’s best start
since Len Casanova’s 1965 team
won its first three games.
“We didn’t play real well at
times, but we made the big
plays,” said Brooks on a victory
which propelled the Ducks to
1-0 in Pac-10 play.
Big plays have been
Oregon’s trademark this year.
The Cal contest was no
different.
Barnes leaping reception over
Cat cornerback Ray Noble was
the loudest explosion of the
Ducks’ big-play day.
"He (Barnes) was the last
read. I just told him on the way
back from the last play to go out
and hesitate to see if he could
beat him (Noble),” said Miller
of the winning play.
Offensive coordinator Bob
Toledo echoed the results of the
Miller-to-Bames hookup in the
end zone.
“It was a great throw,” said
Toledo. “We just told him
(Miller), don’t throw an in
terception or don't get sacked so
we can be in a position to kick
the field goal to win it.He
solved all our problems.”
The Duck defense set up the
winning score when defensive
tackle Dave Maley forced Cal's
Ed Barbero to fumble on the Cal
44 with 2:34 left in the game.
Oregon linebacker Dan Devaney
pounced on the loose ball and
the Ducks were back in
business.
"I wasn’t totally pleased
with our defense, but we made
plays when we had to make
them. That was the important
thing,” said Brooks.
Barnes’ touchdown catch
restored Miller who made an er
ror of Judgement on another
drive in the fourth quarter.
Miller tossed an errant lateral to
tailback Tony Cherry on a third
and-two at the Cal 24. The ball
ended up on the Cal 41 for a
17-yard loss and no chance for
Oregon kicker Matt MacLeod to
try a field goal.
“The fullback was in the way
of the pitch, so I had to wait,”
said Miller. ”1 probably should
have held the ball and followed
in using the blockers.”
Devaney's fumble recovery
gave Miller a chance to redeem
himself.
“They showed a real good at
titude in not giving up,” said
Toledo when the Ducks could
have folded like past teams.
