Meanwhile, the lines will re main long. “Any time you’re trying to place approximately 2,000 students in jobs in one week, you’ll have lines,” says Ed Vignoul, director of student financial aid. "It's an awful lot of people in a short amount of time, and the job they’re doing is really quite good,” he says. Ken Masterson, supervisor of student employment and work study placement, estimates there are 300 more jobs than there are eligible work-study students. “No one who has ever wanted a work-study job has not gotten one,” he says. Masterson says the line pro blem occurs because all the students must go through a cer tain point in order to control the number sent to each employer. . -You should be. There’s been a lot more work this year to this point, but it’s been sped up considerably by the elimination of some paperwork,” Masterson adds. “With 2,000-plus people at the door, the odds were better at the Alamo.” There are approximately 2,700 students eligible for work-study, says Larry Smith, director of Career Planning and Placement. However, there are no accurate figures on how many jobs actually are available, he says. “We’ve revised procedures this year, and now we're handl ing twice as many students per day," Smith says. He estimates that 500 students are processed daily. “But we didn’t anticipate the volume of students. We thought they’d be more evenly distributed throughout the week, so we have learned to staff-up and use faster ways of processing people," Smith says. The eight staff members in charge of work-study process ing recently switched to an ap pointment system, where the students sign up in advance in stead of waiting in line for their validation, he says. “We have made some im provements, and the students have been extremely patient with us. I’d say we've improved 500 percent, but we need 5.000 percent,” Smith says. This year, students waited in the EMU lobby instead of lining up outside the Job Location and Development office on Agate Street as in previous years.
