Ten minutes to a more beautiful face
By Lori Steinhauer
Of Um Emerald
Hey all you makeup marvels
out there. Do you own enough
powders, creams and pencils to
open a secondhand makeup
counter at the local flea market?
Do you spend hours in front
of the mirror trying to create a
vibrant face, only to walk away
with an unfinished look and a
disappointed scowl?
Well you’re not aione battling
the image in the mirror, longing
to greet the world outside look
ing like a Vogue magazine
make-over.
Recently I joined about 30
women for a complimentary
makeup application session, of
fered for the clients of a styling
salon in Seattle. The salon’s
mirrored walls and bright lights
made this group of appearance
minded women examine each
other like specimens under a
microscope.
When the makeup artist
finished painting over my
natural complexion, I glowed
with vitality in the mirrors that
earlier had cast ghostly
shadows on my face.
And though only the good
fairy can turn freaks into foxes,
the session provided useful tips
for home-makeup application.
So breathe easy, lack of basic
training may be the only cause
for your clownish face. For in
stance you may spend too much
time painting on a mask that is
too thick for the true you to
shine through.
Here are some how-to tips
from the consultation for a
10-minute do-it-yourself make
over. Should you feel disap
pointed with the outcome,
don’t worry. You can restore
your original face with a simple
soap and water wash.
Step 1: Moisturize your face
with lotion and lips with lip
gloss.
Step 2: The base coat: apply
foundation with a makeup
sponge. Rub it in well at chin
and n&k line to keep your
makeup job off the list of hottest
discussion topics.
A water base is best for oily
skin, while emulsion bases
replenish the natural oils in a
dry face.
Step 3: Concealer: dab and
rub it into the dark rings under
your eyes to preserve the
mystery of long days at work or
of long wild evenings.
Step 4: For the eyebrows, full
is the fad. However, you can up
date your pinstriped brows of
the past by lightly shading in
the natural line with a gray or
brown^pencil.
Step 5: Enter the great world
of color. The consultants said
predictions for upcoming Euro
pean trends indicate vibrant
shades of blues, rusts and grays
will replace the browns of the
past. Give sparkle and shine to
these rising tones by first
brushing on highlighting
shadows in light pink, light cor
al, cream or white. ..
Accentuate those dazzling
eyes by playing up their
fragments of color rather than
the iris’s overall pigment. If
your green eyes come from
pieces of brown, gray and
yellow for example, try
shadows in those three shades.
Keep in mind intense shades
stay on longest, and light ap
plications * can* -soften - their
For
wide-looking
appearance.
Step tt:
eyes, liner should be drawn
from corner to corner, above the
top lashes and below the lower
lashes, rather than on the inside
linings. For a steady line sturdy
your drawing hand by resting it
on the other fist, pressed against
the cheek below the eye being
lined.
Step 7: Mascara looks best in
black, except on blondes who
need the subtlety of brown. For
smooth and natural looking
lashes, brush through the hairs
with a makeup comb or brush.
Step 8: Blush lines should be
applied at an upward angle
from the inside of the cheek
bones connecting with a sweep
across the forehead from temple
to temple. Long faces are less
accentuated by a dab of blush
on the chin, while short faces
appear lengthier by shadowing
both sides of the neckline with a
stroke of blush.
Step 9: Dot-to-dot lipsticking
is effective. Draw dots on your
upper and lower lips in line
with the inside point of each
nostril, and then extend each
dot out to the ends of your lips
by following their natural line.
Step 10: A finishing touch is
all that remains. Blend in your
makeup by lightly brushing
over your face with a makeup
brush or your finger tips until
achieving an intensity that suits
your personality.
If the 10 minutes of your do
it-yourself make-over have end
ed and you’re still not happy,
you just might consider tiying
to find yourself a good fairy.
