New-student enrollment up
By Jolayne Houtz
Of the Emerald
The University enrolled 5,667 new students
for fall term, an 11.6 percent increase over last
fall’s new-student enrollment, says James Buch,
director of admissions and records.
Buch said he expects the admissions increase
will translate into a total fall term enrollment in
crease for the second straight year. The Universi
ty enrolled 15,478 students last fall, a .5 percent
increase over 1982’s 15,405.
“Like all colleges and universities, we admit
more students than we expect to enroll,” Buch
says, noting that many college-bound students
apply for admission to two or more colleges.
Other indicators that enrollment has increas
ed include large numbers of students par
ticipating in fraternity and sorority rush and the
number of students living in the campus
residence halls.
“The University did a good job finding hous
ing for people,” says Housing Director Marjory
Ramey, adding that there were over 100 people
on a waiting list to get into the dorms until last
week.
“We were all surprised at the high figures. It
indicates higher enrollment and much higher ad
mission figures, and we’re all very pleased, of
course," she says.
The dorms traditionally house one-half of the
freshman class, and when admission figures rise,
so does the number of people wanting dorm
space, Ramey says.
“We’ve had so many students wanting to live
in the dorms that University housing had to ask
several hundred students who preferred a single
room to accept a roommate. They expect all dorm
rooms to be filled,” Buch says.
Many of the dormitories are now special
interest halls, geared toward students interested
in academic pursuit, computer application,
music and fitness. Goals for the housing depart
ment this year include handling the noise prob
lem more effectively with more service from the
resident assistants and getting students involved
with food service committees.
"The staff’s responsibility is to be finely at
tuned to each student’s need for service and a dif
ferent living style,” Ramey says.
Increased enrollment also is affecting the
Greek housing system. The number of students
participating in rush is up by almost 50 percent,
according to Jay Halverson, Panhellenic
representative.
There are 380 women participating in sorori
ty rush, approximately twice as many as last year.
In addition, 391 men are going through fraternity
rush compared with last year's 243 participants.
Buch attributes these high numbers to
University public relations. The University's ef
forts to inform Oregon high school students about
the quality education available at the University
are responsible for the enrollment increase, he
says.
The two-year tuition freeze and the improv
ing economy also are influencing the positive ad
missions picture, Buch says.
“I’m very pleased with the support we’re get
ting from the state. Oregon resident tuition still
ranks among the highest in the West among
public universities. The tuition freeze of the last
two years, however, has brought us closer in line
with our peer institutions,” Buch says.
