church building is now the
home of the Maude Kerns Art
Center, at 1910 E. 15th Ave. east
of campus. The center was built
in 1895 as the Fairmount
Presbyterian Church.
The Fifthpearl Building and
the Fifth Street Public Market,
near the corner of East Fifth
Avenue and High Street, are
reminders of early Eugene in
dustry. Both buildings are
former grain and flour mills. To
the west along Fifth Avenue, at
Willamette Street, are the city’s
two early railroad terminal
buildings: the Southern Pacific
(now Amtrak) depot, built
around 1910, and the Oregon
Electric Railway station, built in
1914.
Interested community groups
may conduct 2V2-hour scenic
tours past Eugene’s historical
buildings with the aid of trained
guides, provided by the Junior
League of Eugene. Tour Chair
Mary Feldman says that groups
must provide their own
transportation, which may
range from a van to a
50-passenger bus.’
Groups wishing to reserve
tour guides or seeking more in
formation may call Feldman
Monday through Friday be
tween 8 a.m. and 5 p m. at
343-4936.

8:30 p.m., and an “aftercare"
group, for persons who have
been through alcohol and drug
treatment programs, meets
Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 7:30
p.m.
Vet Center personnel also are
available to University instruc
tors for class presentations on
Vietnam-related issues. In addi
tion, Maynard says that the
center has a “tremendous"
video library on the Vietnam
conflict and issues of veteran re
adjustment.
Tice says that the center
welcomes drop-in visits by in
dividuals or groups. The center
is open Monday through Friday
from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and in
terested persons or groups may
phone the center (687-6918) for
appointments.
“Nobody has dealt with the
Vietnam experience, and I think
that the public has a
stereotypical view of that ex
perience and its effects on vets’
lives,’’ Maynard explains. “In
general, there has been a con
spiracy of silence around Viet
nam vets and their re
adjustment to America.”
Maynard, Tice and other
members of the Eugene Vet
Center staff join with personnel
at 136 other Vet Centers nation
wide in working to break that
silence from Vietnam-era
veterans and from society at
large.
