Homes map Eugene’s past
By Mike Sims
Of Uie Emerald
Eugene’s storied past lives in
wood and stone. An automobile
or walking tour past the city’s
historical buildings, coupled
with a bit of imagination, brings
to life the 138-year history of
Oregon’s second city.
An afternoon sojourn can
reveal varied examples of
humanity’s imprint on the land
scape. A few Rural Gothic struc
tures, built just after the Civil
War, have survived, including
the Peters-Liston-Wintermeier
house at 1611 Lincoln St.
Also remaining are several
examples of the classic temple
revival style of the late 19th cen
tury. Two can be found at the
University: Deady and Villard
halls, built in 1876 and 1885 as
the University’s first two
buildings. Both edifices are
listed on the National Register
of Historic Places.
Rambling Victorian and
Greek revival homes, built near
the turn of the century, can be
found in many parts of the city.
Several are concentrated in the
East Skinner Butte Historic
Landmark Area (bordered by
Pearl and High streets and East
Second and Fourth avenues).
Two prominent examples,
however, are found right here
on campus. Modern-day
University students,
faculty and staff enjoy
lunch in the former
home of 19th century
science professor
George Collier, at the
corner of East 13th
Avenue and University
Street.
And A.W. Patterson,
a pioneer doctor who
also served as a school
superintendent and
state legislator, pro
bably never dreamed
that his abode at 751 E.
11th Ave. would enjoy
worldwide fame 75
years after his
residence there. Patter
son’s home was in
habited by John
Belushi, Tim Matheson
and their Delta
brothers in the 1978
motion picture "Na
tional Lampoon’s
Animal House.”
The Tudor revival ar
chitecture of the 1920s
lives in many campus
area homes and frater
nity/sorority houses, such as the
Sigma Alpha Epsilon house at
812 E. 14th Ave. There also are
several Tudor structures in
outlying areas of the city, built
and inhabited by the nouveau
riche of the post-World War I
Early University science professor George Collier’s former home
is a favorite luncheon spot for today’s faculty, students and
staff.

era.
Other fringe areas, such as the
region bordered by East 24th
and 28th avenues south of cam
pus. hold block upon block of
small, sturdy wood frame
houses that recall the first stir
rings of mass-built suburbia in
Eugene during the 1930s and
’40s.
Public and commercial
buildings have appeal to history
and architecture buffs as well.
Some of the best examples were
razed between 1958 and the
mid-1970s, victims of urban
renewal and construction of the
City of Eugene-Lane County
civic center and park blocks.
The Smeed Hotel building, at
767 Willamette St., survived the
modernization process,
however. Built in 1884, the
Smeed is now home to offices,
shops and a restaurant.
