books and pamphlets on birth
control and diseases, as well as
periodically offering seminars
conducted by a doctor that
discuss sexually transmitted
diseases and related issues.
In addition, the health center
offers such testing as the urine
test for pregnancy and the
penicillin cure for a sexually
transmitted disease.
“It’s too bad each new
college-age group has to learn
the hard way.” Loomis says.
"Students don't need to buy a
sex cookbook on how to, all
they need to do is ask. The
health center staff is easy to talk
with.”
The student health center is
on campus at the corner of East
13th Avenue and Agate Street.

However, if a student would
rather seek aid off campus, he or
she can contact Planned Paren
thood. "We are set up to take
calls and talk about sex,” says
Mary Widoff, educational direc
tor for Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parenthood serves
about 20 University students a
month, says Polly Ashworth,
the clinic coordinator of Plann
ed Parenthood.
Widoff says Planned Par
enthood provides counseling
from the nurse practitioner or
Planned Parenthood staff and
also offers a library with infor
mation on birth contol and sex
related diseases.
In addition, “Planned Paren
thood also does testing from
pap smears to pelvic tests,” she
says. Also, Planned Parenthood
sells most methods of birth con
trol products at prices less than
a pharmacy would charge,
Widoff says.
“We are affordable, accessi
ble and friendly,” Widoff says.
“At Planned Parenthood we
treat people like clients, not like
patients."
Planned Parenthood is
located at 134 E. l3th Ave. in
downtown Eugene. The phone
number is 344-9411.
The third alternative is the
Women’s Medical Service
located at 598 E. 13th Ave.,
485-0420 or 484-7420.
Leonard says the clinic sees
about 100 University women a
month, whether it’s for testing,
for pregnancy or a general
physical. “The clinic has a
complete laboratory to do all the
testing from pregnancy to pap
smear,” she says.
The Women’s Medical Ser
vice provides many of the same
services as the other institutions
plus one — it offers abortions.
For anywhere from $200 to
$1300, depending upon the
development of the fetus, the
clinic will terminate a
pregnancy.
Leonard says, “We demand
cash up front for abortions, but
everything else we can bill them
on their insurance.”
Ironically, the clinic does not
sell birth contol products. It
does provide samples.
Leonard says the two most ef
fective methods of birth control
are the pill and the intrauterine
device. However, she says they
are also the two most
dangerous.
Some years ago an 18-year
old women died of a blood clot.
“She was on the pill and she
was smoking,” Leonard ex
plains. “This is the biggest
single risk when taking the pill
because the smoking creates a
condition that causes blood
clotting.”
Leonard added, if clinic per
sonnel would have known that
the young woman was smoking,
they would have advised her to
stop.
Meanwhile, the IUD is
dangerous because, in
Leonard’s words, “it’s like
playing Russian Roulette.” The
IUD may or may not cause
sterility, she says.
The other facility is Sacred
Heart Hospital, 1255 Hilyard
St., 686-7300. It is primarily
concerned with emergency care
or childbirth.
The hospital provides
childbirth classes as well as
literature on birth control and
sex-related diseases.
