    Pre Classic attracts stars
The last major track and field
meet before the Summer Olym
pic Games will bring some 80
Olympians from 20 countries to
Hayward Field Saturday.
The 10th annual Prefontaine
Classic will showcase perfor
mances by top American and in
ternational track and field stars.
Meet director Tom Jordan says
the Olympic-year classic has
“the potential to be one of the
best invitational meets ever
held in the U.S.”
Opening ceremonies begin at
4:55 p.m. with a moment of
silence in memory of former
world-class distance runner and
Duck letter winner Steve
Prefontaine. The Bill Bowerman
Classic was rededicated in Pre’s
honor a week after his death in
May 1975.
Former Olympic athletes in
attendance at the meet also will
be introduced at the opening
ceremonies. Actual competition
begins with the hammer throw
at 3:45 p.m. *
The classic field will feature
several world record holders,
including Chinese high-jumper
Zhu Jianhua. Zhu jumped 7-10
r
to break his own world record at
a June 10 meet in West
Germany.
American Tom Tetranoff, cur
rent world record holder in the
javelin throw, also will appear
at the classic.
University running-ace Joa
quim Cruz announced Tuesday
that he will compete in the
1,000 meter run. Cruz, who
won individual titles for the
NCAA champion Ducks in the
800 and the 1,500 meters this
spring, had originally planned
to pass the classic because it
was scheduled too soon before
the Olympics.
Two-time New York
Marathon winner and former
Duck Alberto Salazar will com
pete in the 10,000 meter run
against Mark Nenow, third
fastest American in the event.
Art Boileau of Canada, a former
University runner, also will
compete.
Mary Decker of Athletics
West, slated for Olympic com
petition in the women’s 3,000
meter run, will compete in the
1,500 meters at the classic
against Kim Gallagher.
Blues revue to play
Ten veteran blues musicians will bring a varied sampling
of this folk art to the Community Center for the Performing
Arts on Friday.
The first act of the traveling blues revue will feature
traditional country blues performers. That will be followed
by a dance with a band headed by Chicago singer and
guitarist David “Honeyboy” Edwards.
The revue was organized by Andy Cohen, a young musi
cian who also will perform with the show. This tour brings
many of these musicians to the Northwest for the first time.
The country blues segment will include Cohen, guitarist
Jim Brewer, the piano and guitar team of John Dee Holman
and Quentin Holoway, and the Rev. Dan Smith, who plays
harmonica in the tradition of Sonny Terry.
Edwards is originally from Mississippi where he played
with Charley Patton and Robert Johnson, two of the most in
fluential Delta blues singers. He later moved to Chicago
where he recorded for Chess and other record labels.
Edwards will be joined by Lester Davenport, who played
harmonica on early Bo Diddley recordings. “Harmonica”
Frank Frost will appear as a special guest.
Tickets for the show are $5 in advance, $6 the day of the
show, and are available at the EMU main desk, Earth River
Records and the W.O.W. Hall office.
Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show starts at 8:30 p.m. The
show is open to all ages. Beer will be served downstairs.
