I point the whole book was about the marathon,
and the rest was just an escape to Kona. And
I then that took over; the marathon just shrank
and shrank.”
What about Steadman, who in the book has
probably the worst working vacation of his life?
"The portrait of Steadman is about right,”
said Thompson. "Ralph is just about that way."
But is the rest of "Lono" fictional? "Not much.
No. I am Lono. Hey, can I have another one of
those Dunhills?
"It was an art project. An experience."
Before he caught campaign fever, Thompson
was working on a book called "The Silk Road."
He traveled to Grenada last fall to cover the U.S.
invasion. "That was sort of part of the silk road.
The Silk Road is sort of a great Cuban novel."
(The name comes from the road from Tibet to
China, but that's not what it means in this case.)
"The silk road is the road we took to get here,"
he says. "To the '80s. Big money. Buy. Sell.
Yeah, the silk road is the one we travel to get
here. But somehow this damn campaign got in
the way."
The conversation turned to Pres. Ronald
Reagan. Thompson smiled. "He's a 74-year-old
man you know. He's a Barbie doll. So is his
wife," he said, adding jokingly, "I don't know.
He's probably a nice old guy."
And when Thompson went to speak to the
crowd in Mac Court I thought, he too, was a
nice old guy as long as he had his Dunhills.
