    Survey
Continued from Page 1
Klonoski says. Although more Oregonians
register as Democrats than with any other
party, “they might as well register
Republican" because the majority vote
consistently for conservative candidates,
he says.
Ever since Republican president Herbert
Hoover held office during the depression,
it became more popular for voters to
register as Democrats, Klonoski says. But
Oregonians have consistently chosen
Republican presidential candidates — ex
cept in 1964, when Barry Coldwater ran,
he says.
In addition, the survey reflects the
political assumption that younger
students register to vote less than older
students. Fitty-mne percent ot students
or younger said they had registered as
compared to the 70-80 percent ratio for
those 20 and older.
A slightly higher number of men than
women said they had registered to vote.
The survey was broken down by gender
and by four age categories: 19 and under,
zu, zi-zz, ana zj ana over.
Taking the survey were 42 students age
19 and under, 31 20-year-olds, 69 21-22
year-olds, and 133 students age 23 and
above.
The students majored in subjects vary
ing from music, education and biology to
computer science, journalism and
physical education.
