rhrilling Whitewater adventure
s blended with scenes of Kat
nandu, the Himalayas and
Hbetan nomads in the ‘‘First
Descent of the Karnali,” a
nulti-media show that will be
Dresented Thursday at 7:30
D.m. in the EMU Ballroom. The
slide show, narrated by Out
door Program Director Bruce
Vlason, follows the Eugene
Dased expedition’s 55-day des
cent of one of the world’s
greatest whitewater
shallenges. Several year's of
'esearch prior to the trip
revealed that there was virtual
y no information, photos or
maps available on the Karnali
region in far western Nepal.
The river, never run before,
was too long to scout
beforehand, and too remote to
permit the use of two-way
radios for rescue. The river
runners found themselves
pushing off into the unknown
with no chance of outside
rescue if there was a problem,
and little information on what
lay ahead.
Water purification in the out
doors will be the topic of a
presentation by Dr. John
Wilson Monday at 7:30 p.m. in
Room 107 Lawrence. Wilson
will discuss the symptoms
and treatment of diseases
transmitted by contaminated
waters and methods for
treating wilderness water
sources.
A slide show on cycling in the
San Juan Islands in the state
of Washington will kick off a
three-day series of presenta
tions on bike touring next
week. On Tuesday, Keith
Nelson of the University’s Out
door Program will present a
slide show detailing a bike
tour of Lopez, Shaw, Orcas
and San Juan islands. Also
slated is a discussion of future
Outdoor Program cycling
trips, including a June tour to
the San Juan Islands.
RIM deadlines: Entries for
racquetball (mixed doubles)
are due Friday; matches begin
on Saturday.
