University student wins Truman scholarship University student Carol Benedick has been selected as Oregon's recipient of the 1984 Harry Truman Scholarship. Benedick, a junior in international studies, was one of only 105 students chosen this year. "It's a very high honor — very similar to the Rhodes," says Clarence Thurber, director of the international studies department. In order to be eligible for this scholarship students must be no more than halfway through their sophomore year when applying and must be entering their junior year at the time of the award's receival, Thurber says. The awards, which offer up to $5,000 per year for the last two years of college and two years of graduate study, are granted to highly motivated students who are pursu ing careers in public service at the federal, state or local level. The scholarships will be presented to the recipients by the late president's daughter, Margaret Truman Daniel, during a ceremony Sunday in Independence, Missouri, where Truman lived and is now buried. According to Benedick, the scholarship will pay her entire tuition, books, and basic living expenses. “What this means is that I can concen trate more on school work rather than making money,” she says. "I will also have more time for public service work, which is what the scholarship is intended for.” Benedick, who has a 3.9 GPA, is only in her second year of college, but is already close to senior status. She will be cam paigning for OSPIRG's state chair later this month. et al MEETINGS MADCAAPS will meet today at 3:30 p.m. in EMU Cen tury Room C. Representatives from each group must attend.
