It takes just two hours, and for those who don't cringe at the sight of their blood flowing into an IV bag, it is painless. But according to Roger Dunham, an employee at the Eugene Plasma Corp., the catch is the stigma attached to being a plasma doner. “Very few donors would dare let their friends know that they donate," Dunham says. “There's a stigma attached which af fects the self-image." More than 150 people donate blood at the downtown center, according to manager Kim Bedell. While the stereotyped image is that of a down-and out transient needing $10 for a bottle. “We get a varied composition of peo ple," Bedell says. “We see professionals, students, the unemployed and couples. Very few are actually transients." Dunham is also aware of the variety of people. He believes that while there's no method of characterizing the "average" donor, they are identifiable in two groups. "We get a lot of donors who are temporary and then we see a group who tend to be more permanent," Dunham says. "The student population tends to be temporary. They come in at the end of the term when the money runs out or whenever they might need some quick cash," Dunham says. "The other group is those who come in routinely. Sometimes maybe a husband and wife will come in twice a week to pay some of the bills." But it is distressing to see the many who come in with the intention that it will be a temporary situation, but keep coming back, Dunham says. "Those people have a low self-confidence and it keeps getting lower because they don't want to donate," Dunham says. "One woman came in a few times. She was in tears because she was so fearful of the whole ordeal," Dunham says. "I asked her 'Why are you here if you hate doing it?' and she said, 'I have two children and I have to feed them.'
