policies such as defense spen
ding, Frank says.
Hatfield is a supporter of the
pro-life movement, Frank says.
Hendriksen feels the only way
to win the election is to make
Oregonians aware of the issues
on which she opposes Hatfield..
“My whole challenge is to
mount the kind of campaign
that will allow me to get his
record out and present positive
alternatives,” Hendriksen says.
“The deficit is the over-riding
issue. He (Hatfield) has voted for
the tax cuts, which primarily
benefit upper income groups.
The leading factor of the deficit
is the tax reduction,” she says.
“He's also supported the
Reagan budget cuts, domestic
programs for the most part, and
as Chair of the Appropriations
Committee, he's in a leadership
position and has implemented
the Reagan program."
A 1975 graduate of the Univer
sity Law School, Hendriksen
thinks students would benefit if
she were in office, she says.
"What students should know
is that Mr. Hatfield voted against
restoring money for student
loans," Hendriksen says. "We
(Oregonians) lost $200 million in
the state General Fund in fiscal
year '81-'82. Of that money, $100
million was in social services,
$50 million was in education
and the rest was sprinkled
throughout the budget."
Hendriksen says Hatfield
doesn't do a good job of
representing the majority of
Oregonians. She says Repub
lican leadership has turned a
deaf ear to the poor and
unemployed.
"Mr. Hatfield has not oppos
ed, and in many cases he has
supported, cuts in unemploy
ment benefits. He has only a 29
percent environmental rating
and basically, he has voted
many times for issues that have
negatively impacted the majori
ty of people in Oregon," Hen
driksen says.

University keeps custodians
The University does not in
tend to contract out custodial
work, at least during the 1984-85
academic year, University Pres.
Paul Olum told a meeting of
about 70 custodians last week.
A combination of staff reduc
tions made this year and new
money-saving ideas being
developed through the
University-Oregon Public
Employes Union Productivity
Project is making it possible to
continue handling custodial ser
vices with regular University
employees, Olum said.
"The loyalty of University staff
members has been a vital ele
ment in making this University
the quality institution it is to
day," he said.
Physical Plant Director Harold
Babcock said the University
eliminated 15 custodal positions
this year, resulting in annual
savings of $300,000 per year. A
total savings of $350,000 would
put custodial costs at about the
same level that outside contrac
tors could be expected to bid,
he said.
