    Children experience campus life
Editors note: Three South Eugene High
School students experienced the Univer
sity student newspaper by covering Cam
pus Kids' Day. These are their reports:
While a number of people enjoyed a
holiday, volunteers held several events
for children on the University campus
Monday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
"Kids' Day was for children in the
University community — children of
students, faculty and staff," and also
local youth groups, said organizer Rachel
Bellamy.
"It was a common experience among
some of the women that it was difficult
for family members to understand why
they're going to school, and as well, what
school is," said Bellamy, a journalism ma
jor who worked with Women in Transi
tion last year.
Bellamy proposed the program to the
Student University Relations Council last
spring. Mark Thompson and Eileen Ho
were co-organizers in the program.

Memorabilia
The University Archives displayed
memorabilia in the EMU, which included
front pages of the Register-Guard and
the Oregon Daily Emerald in 1939,
freshman initiation posters and 70-year
old pictures of the University campus.
Pictured in the exhibit were photos of a
1918 anatomy class and the intersection
of 13th Avenue and Kincaid Street in
1928.
The 60-year-old initiation posters spoke
of ".. .toiling to please your unrelenting
masters, the class of '21...”
Although some kids found the displays
"kind of crowded,” all seemed to echo
this one response: "It was really fun."

The play's the thing
Jerry Reinhardt, University Theatre
Technical Director, gave two children's
tours of Robinson Theatre Monday
afternoon.
Reinhardt explained the mechanics of
a stage production, from curtain opera
tion to costuming.
He said designing a play is done “the
same way an architect does drawings for
a building."
"You don't have to be a student to ex
perience the University," said Dianne
Mason, who brought her two children
and a friend. She said the event was very
instructional.
Much of the tour centered on the play
"St. Joan,” by George Bernard Shaw,
which will be performed at Robinson
Theatre the next two weekends.

Campus Kid's Day, a day for children

sponsored by SURC, let these children
have a little fun with paint Monday.
First meeting
established for
support group
A support group for students
who have family or friends with
cancer, or who have lost a friend
or family member to cancer, will
hold its first meeting tonight at
7:30 p.m. in Century room D of
the EMU.
leanne Wojack, a co-facilitator
of Sacred Heart's cancer sup
port group and a counselor at
the Bright Wings counseling
center, will be the guest
speaker.
The idea for the group was
originated by Leslie Hickcox, a
graduate teaching fellow in the
School and Community Health
department, after she lectured
about the affects of losing a
family member to cancer.
Tonight's meeting, sponsored
by the American Cancer Socie
ty, will culminate by breaking
into small discussion groups,
and the small group format will
be continued in later meetings,
Hickcox says.
She plans to hold two to three
small meetings a month discuss
ing the process of supporting
someone dealing with cancer.
Topics will include the grief pro
cess and stress related grief.
Hickcox lost her father to
cancer in December and says
the experience of dealing with a
family member with terminal il
lness has affected her career
and her life.
“There's a strange, long-term
tension,” she says.
