Trapp's 18 spells doom for SC

What a weekend it was for Greg Trapp.
The 6-7 junior put his past problems
behind him Saturday, scoring 18 points,
grabbing ten rebounds and rejecting two
shots to lead Oregon's basketball team
past University of Southern California,
52-47, at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles.
The win over USC did more than give
the Ducks an 8-3 mark in the Pac-10, two
games behind first-place Washington,
10-1, and one-half game back of Oregon
State, 8-2.
Victory also gave Oregon, 13-8, a road
sweep of the Los Angeles schools follow
ing a dramatic 87-83 overtime win against
UCLA Thursday night. One has to go
back to Dick Harter and 1977 to find the
last time the Ducks blanked USC and
UCLA in the same weekend.
Much of the credit for the sweep had
to go to Trapp. He scored 16 points in the
second half to keep the Trojans at bay,
matched his career-high point total set
against Colorado, and gave the Ducks an
outlet with center Blair Rasmussen
plagued by cold shooting.
In one sequence, Trapp checked a shot
by USC's Derrick Dowell on the defen
sive end, grabbed a rebound at the other
end, and found Rasmussen underneath
after hauling in a second offensive
board.
The performance against Troy, of
course, has to take a back seat to Thurs
day night and 'The Shot' that burned the
Bruins. All Trapp did was retrieve a Gary
Gatewood miss, leap two feet over the
baseline, corral line basketball with one
hand and simultaneously flip it skyward.
He got nothing but twine, and David
Brantley went on to score eight points in
overtime to silence the stunned Bruins.
Pac-10 offic ials ruled Trapp's shot a legal
one the next day.
Despite Trapp, Oregon had all il
wanted from Southern Cal. With Dowell
and Wayne Carlander pounding away in
side, USC shrugged off 24 percent first
half shooting and trailed just 25-20 at
intermission.
The Ducks broke out to a 37-28 lead to
open the second half, but the Trojans
rallied. Kevin Steward's follow shot
brought SC within 41-39, and things look
ed shaky for coach Don Monson's gang.
It was a game past Oregon teams may
have lost. Not this one. Trapp nailed a
15-looter, dropped in two tree throws,
and the Ducks survived.
"We had a job to do after beating
UCLA, and we did it against USC," said
Oregon guard Chris Harper, who had 13
points Saturday.
Now the question is whether Oregon
can play with the big boys, Washington
and Oregon State. The Ducks, with their
fate in their own reac h, entertain the*
Huskies Saturday and get a c rac k at the
Beavers in Call Coliseum March 3.
Many are assuming Washington enters
sweep country on its road trip to Cor
vallis and Eugene this week, but Monson
isn't so sure*.
"People keep thinking they'll (the
Huskies) lose both games, but what they
forget is that they're playing with a lot of
confidence right now," Monson said.
Lang's first, so are Oregon women

Alison Lang became Oregon's
all-time scoring leader, and the
Ducks celebrated their
homecoming by moving into
sole possession of first place in
the MorPac Conference with a
sweep of California and San
Jose State Friday and Saturday
night at McArthur Court.
The wins, a 97-65 field day
over Cal and a 66-58 struggle
against San Jose State, boosted
the Ducks to 7-1 in league play
with 12 points. Oregon State,
which swept the same two
schools in Corvallis, trails the
Ducks by a point.
The Cal game, previewed as a
tough showdown for first place
and the right to host the NorPac
tournament March 9-10, was
anything but that.
Oregon, fired up by 1,500 fans
after playing 19 of its 21 games
on the road, jumped on the
Bears early. The Ducks took a
16-6 lead six minutes into the
game and hit an 63 percent of
their first-half shots.
The women's hot shooting
touch was aided by numerous
fast break layins against a flat
and half-asleep Bear defense.
"We broke well tonight," said
guard Lauri Tennant, who turn
ed in a team-high 19 points to go
with seven rebounds and seven
assists. "Heather (McDuffie, on
the receiving end of several fast
break scores) and I com
plemented each other well. We
were ready to play."
Tennant's 19 and McDuffie's
14 were not the entire scoring
show, however.
Lang added a subpar 13
points, but that was enough to
move her ahead of Bev Smith on
the school's all-time scoring list.
