It has come to my attention that
the Commentator is applying for
student funding through the In
cidental Fees Committee. Also, we
have the ASUO paper putting out
left wing propaganda by the
bucket load.
My nightmare is that with more
propaganda will come a circus
funded by the University where
the extreme right and left throw
brickbats at our financial expense.
I am tired of publically funded
"political education” and wish the
ASUO and Commentator
newspapers would shut down if
they have the "view” of "political
education" at the expense of ac
tual newsreporting.

Commending
I am writing in regard to the arti
cle of Nov. 10 concerning the ar
chitecture of Prince LucJen Camp
bell Hall. I would like to commend
the reporter who wrote the article.
I enjoyed reading the article and
must confess that I agree with
much of the assessment of the
building. Of course, architects
must work within a multitude of
constraints in order to see that
r
building projects are actually
built. I presume that various kinds
of financial and bureaucratic in
fluences had some real impact on
the quality of the PLC project. For
some perverse reason it is assum
ed that public buildings should be
cheap and shoddy to convince
the "public" that we spend our
funds "wisely." Needless to say,
this is poor practice.
The comments by Professor
Pomeroy concerning lack of
"user" participation in the design
of PLC are well taken; architects
often ask for user input for project
design but, for a variety of
reasons, are not always able to
take full advantage of these ideas.
Actually, the current process for
planning and design of buildings
on the University campus uses a
rather controversial methodology
to ensure proper user input in
building design; it is called (ap
propriately enough) the Oregon
Experiment.
The Oregon Experiment is a
book (available in the University
bookstore in the architecture sec
tion) which is part of an important
trilogy of books relating to a user
based system of design authored
by architectural theorist
Christopher Alexander. The
trilogy is published by the Oxford
University press and is of
worldwide significance as a plann
ing and design theory. That pro
cess specifies just the kind of user
group involvement that Pomeroy
mentions. The advantage of this
process of design (in Pomeroy's
sense) is that the user is really at
the center of the process and
becomes a very important compo
nent in all of the design decisions.
Perhaps the best example of this
approach is the design of the
courtyard and new addition to the
School of Education, a rather de
cent and humane environment
(though not without its own set of
problems).
I appreciate the Emerald's in
terest in campus environment; I
would hope that this is the first of
a series of articles on campus
buildings and places.

First of all, let me explain that
although I participated in the Nov.
11 protest against a bilateral
freeze, I am not a member of the
College Republicans nor of the
Coalition for Peace Through
Strength. My opinions are not
necessarily theirs, nor are theirs
always mine. But on the subject of
the Emerald's editorial concerning
our anti freeze protest we are in
complete accord: The Emerald has
misrepresented our position.
The Nov. 14 editorial depicted
us as chauvinistic reactionaries
chanting ambiguous slogans. Dur
ing the protest we did not
"chant," but respected the right
of the programmed speaker to
state his views without interrup
tion. We are not now, nor have we
ever been ignorant of the threat of
global nuclear holocaust. Our
main goal is to prevent the horrors
that nuclear war would cause by
making sure that it never happens
to anyone. And as for our am
biguity, I think everyone who
cared to try, understood our
position.
Through implications in the
editorial, the Emerald has
slandered our cause. I personally
don't appreciate this, and I'm sure
the College Republicans are not
thrilled about it either. I would
welcome a return to ethical
writing on the part of the Emerald
staff so that the issue of nuclear
disarmament won't become
clouded anymore than it is.

In October 31st's Emerald, you
printed a letter from Sue Little
which asked why the Library
subscribed to fag Rag but not to
Madison Avenue.
Madison Avenue is a trade jour
nal which gives in-depth coverage
to specific media campaigns. The
Library will certainly consider a
subscription.
Little also asked why a tax
supported library subscribes to
Fag Rag, a magazine which she
described as featuring “bondage,
sodomy, and child prostituion."
Bill Katz, in Magazines for
Libraries, says “Over the years.
Fag Rag has never lost its
underground, anarchist flavor and
continues to publish outrageously
iconoclastic articles..." Fag Rag
also includes poems, plays, and
fiction.
Obviously the budget does not
permit, nor does space allow, the
acquisition of all journals and
books which are of value. The
Library strives to obtain the books
and journals which will give the
academic community access to a
variety of ideas as well as preserve
the materials for use of future
researchers. We would be
negligent in our responsibility to
the taxpayers of Oregon if we did
not do this.
I hope that this will answer Lit
tle's questions. Little is welcome
to discuss this with me further if
she would like.
