Ducks visit Stanford with 4-3 league mark in mind
By Doug Levy
Of the Emerald
When Oregon's football team lines up to
play Stanford University Saturday in Palo
Alto, Calif., there won't be anymore Rose
Bowl talk about the Ducks.
Instead, Oregon (3-6, 2-3) against the Car
dinal (1-6, 1-5) is being billed 'crummy game
of the week' by 'Bottom Ten' syndicated
columnist Steve Harvey, who lists the Car
dinals as his No. 1 non-team.
Still, Oregon coach Rich Brooks thinks of
this one as anything but a laughing matter.
He wants to see the Ducks beat Stanford
and Oregon State University to post a 4-3
Pac-10 mark.
"That would be a winning conference
record," says Brooks, "and we'd be achiev
ing something nobody predicted we would.
If we go 4-3, we'll certainly be in the upper
half of the conference."
Beating the Cardinal might be easier if the
Ducks weren't an advertisement for crut
ches. The latest injury victim — starting
quarterback Mike Jorgensen, who suffered
a broken right fibula against UCLA.
Without Jorgensen, the Ducks will use
either Mike Owens or local freshman Chris
Miller against Stanford.
Miller or Owens will try to get the ball to
Oregon's Mr. Explosive, Lew Barnes.
The flanker has averaged 22.1 yards a
reception and 15.8 a punt return (second in
the nation) to cause opposing defenses a lot
of sleepless nights. Offensive coordinator
Bob Toledo and Brooks agree he needs to
get tne Dan.
"It doesn't take a genius to figure that
out," says Toledo. "We're continually figur
ing out ways to get it (the football) to him."
When Stanford is on offense, Oregon
must keep an eye on freshman quarterback
sensation John Paye.
"He has a lot of talent. All he needs is
time to develop it," says Toledo.
Kickoff time in Palo Alto is 1 p.m. The Car
dinal is rated a fYi point favorite over the
Ducks.
Hagler wins
over Duran
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Marvelous
Marvin Hagler, fighting a man he
called "a legend," showed Thurs
day night what it takes to beat so
meone that good.
"I give him a lot of credit, but
you've got to give me a lot of
credit too," Hagler said after
defending his undisputed mid
dleweight crown with a
unanimous, but close, 15-round
decision over Roberto Duran.
"This man's a legend. I'm very
proud of myself to beat a man
with three world titles."
Hagler, who has longed for a big
payday throughout his 62-fight
professional career, said the
money he earned for beating
Duran — more than $5 million —
made his entire boxing career
worthwhile.
"The peanuts all paid off
tonight. I knew one day I'd be
there. I kept the faith. I guess
tonight was the big money, eh?"
Hagler says he knew he had to
win the final two rounds to retain
his title.
"My manager and trainer told
me, 'We got to win these big,"'
Hagler said. "I couldn't see him
beating me."
