Ultimate spins to Oregon
By Blair Thompson

Mention the word Frisbee, and
casual observers think of lazy
summer afternoons and plastic
discs in flight.
But Frisbee sports are no longer
just for casual observers. Frisbee
golf is now rivaling hacky sack as a
University athletic passion.
The latest Frisbee spinoff is a
game mixing football, basketball,
and soccer skills that's modestly
called Ultimate.
In Eugene, two teams, the Mojo
Flyers and Dark Star, compete in
this action-packed sport.
But it is there that similarities
between the two teams end.
"Dark Star is a lot more com
petitive than us," says Flyer coach
Bill Spicer.
Indeed, the Star has progressed
from a University Club Sports pro
gram to a high-powered city team.
And unlike the Club Sports
Flyers, the Star plays together on a
year-round basis.
"It hurts our team to not be able
to play together in the summer,"
says Spicer.
What hurt even more was the
defection of five top-notch Flyer
players to the Star last year.
"I wanted to see what I could do
at a higher level," explains former
Flyer Mike Moran.
Make no mistake about it — fun
plays only a small part in the Star's
philosophy.
"We don’t just go to tourneys to
have fun. We like to do as well as
possible," says Moran.
Spicer and Moran agree that a
rivalry has developed between the
two teams, but they insist that it is
purely a "fun" one.
"We're not out to get each
other," says Moran.
The Dark Stars, actually, are out
to get their opponents — and with
experienced and competitive
players, they've gotten results.

of three games. The Flyers, mean
while, are set to host the spring
season's first tournament, The
Mudbowl.

While the Dark Stars set win
ning a goal, the Flyers depend on
entertainment.
"A good attitude is necessary
for our team,” says Spicer, "We
like to have a lot of fun."
Lady Dark Stars fly high
Eugene's women’s Dark Star
team finished first in the
Ultimate Frisbee Western
Regional Championships in
Davis, Calif., Nov. 5-6, to earn a
trip to the national Ultimate
competition in New Orleans,
La., Nov. 26-28.
The lady Dark Stars defeated
the Santa Barbara Condors 15-8
in the finals to earn a trip to
New Orleans.
The Dark Stars, featuring
nine University students on
their 13-woman roster,
qualified for Western
Regionals by winning six
straight regular-season games.
Michigan State University
should provide stern competi
tion for the Dark Stars at na
tionals. They may not face that
competition without money,
though. Those who wish to
contribute to the Dark Stars
should call 344-2432.

University Pres. Paul Olum stop

was made too quickly.
The hearing will be held Nov. 16

The temporary rule authorizes
employees to ask for a visual in
spection of backpacks, large
purses and bulky items to ensure
prohibited items are not

Other items prohibited by the
temporary rule include metal and
plastic containers, explosives and
weapons.
From Associated Press reports
The University has scheduled a
public hearing to discuss a rule
banning alcoholic beverages,
fireworks and other items from
athletic facilities.
The rule went into effect Aug. 15
on a temporary basis for 180 days.
It expanded a 1977 rule that for

The new rule was proposed in
connection with a plan to begin
