Bruins withstand Oregon rally

Fourth-quarter heroics from
Lew Barnes couldn't compensate
for missed tackles, Kevin Nelson
and a key fourth-quarter fumble
as Oregon's football team lost
24-13 to Rose Bowl pacesetter
UCLA Saturday at Autzen
Stadium.

return for a score, but UCLA's
Nelson steamrolled Oregon for
131 yards, and a fumble by defen
sive back Don Brown after his in
terception with 6:46 to go spelled
doom for the Ducks.
Oregon, its depth chart strangl
ed by injuries, was mesmerized by
a powerful Bruin offensive line
and whirling dervish Nelson —

UCLA ate up 155 yards to take a
14-0 halftime lead.
Mostly, though, the Ducks were
victimized by their inability to
hang on to Nelson and running
mates Danny Andrews and Frank
Cephous.
"UCLA is a fine team — their of

think we missed more tackles in
that (first) half than in any game

Missed tackles or not, Nelson
spotted holes, made timely cuts,
spun off tackles, and generally
made the Duck defense look silly.
Luckily, six UCLA penalties for
72 yards, most of them holding
calls, saved the Ducks from a
larger first-half deficit.
The third of Nelson's three
touchdowns, a 35-yard scamper
with 10:56 remaining in the third
quarter, gave the Bruins a sup
posedly comfortable 21-0 advan
tage. But UCLA’s first-half
dominance stirred the Ducks.
"Different guys starting stan
ding up and saying 'hey, they're
not that great,' " said Oregon
linebacker E.). Duffy.
Quarterback Mike Jorgensen
was out for the year courtesy of a
tirst-quarter takedown by UCLA's
Doug West, and second-stringer
Mike Owens failed to motivate the
team, so Brooks turned to ex
Sheldon High School freshman
Chris Miller.
Miller, heretofore a strong red
shirt possibility, admitted he was
"incredibly nervous” after Brooks
inserted him into the game late in
the third quarter.
However, as Brooks said, the
freshman "made things happen"
and his TD toss to Barnes with
13:03 left put Oregon within strik
ing distance. The Ducks held,
UCLA punted and Barnes sped
69-yards to paydirt.
Momentum and 24,511 fans lif
ting them, the Ducks got an in
terception when outside
linebacker Jerry Mikels tipped a
Rick Neuheisel pass into the
waiting arms of Brown.
In his excitement, Brown waved
the ball carelessly on his return,
was hit and fumbled. UCLA
recovered; the Ducks never did.
John Lee's 24-yard field goal en
sured a 24-13 verdict.
