Carson Continued from Page 9A it's kind of hard to stop.” The players, too, know that Carson's stan ding among high school powers is exceeded by few. "Everybody wants to go to Carson because of the tradition,” says Brown. "If you can make Carson, you can make any team." Carson, a three-year high school, fields three different teams. First there is the sophomore team, then junior varsity the next year, and finally varsity senior year. According to Vollnogle, it takes a special player to start on the varsity team any time before senior year. "Our program is such that you put in your two years before you play varsity," says the Carson coach. "But there are exceptions." Two of those exceptions are in the Oregon secondary. Cason started at Carson his junior and senior season, as did Judge. CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DUCKS Being a star in high school is one thing; be ing a star on the college level is another. But the Carson natives have made an impact dur ing their stay. A senior, Johnson has rushed for almost 1,000 yards during his Oregon career. He's sav ed his best for last, gaining 303 yards this season with three games to go. His best season was 1982, when he gained 332 yards. Judge, who started five games as a freshman, made his presence felt this year before suffer ing a knee injury at Arizona. He was among the nation's leaders in kickoff returns with a 32.7 average and also had an interception. Judge's longest kickoff return was a 91-yarder against Arizona. He sliced through Oregon's wedge, cut left, and sprinted down the sideline before being tackled inside the Wildcat 10-yard line. Brown has intercepted a pass this season and broken up several others, while Cason is the leading tackier in the Duck secondary. Meanwhile, McCall has been a double threat on offense, leading the team in receiving with 24 catches and rushing for 176 yards. But the biggest contribution from these five may be in recruiting wars. Judge says three or four major college players graduate from Car son every year, and he feels the Ducks can snatch their share of the standouts. "I'd say that when there's any talent (at Car son) from now on, we have a good shot at it."
