diverse, as he helps Ramsdell, prepares
defensive scouting reports on upcoming
opponents and directs the scout team
defense against the starting offense during
weekly practices.
The latter of these tasks is the toughest,
according to Ramsdell, as it involves
motivating seldom-used players to give the
offense "a good look" at a future op
ponents' defense. Ramsdell says it is a task
Moser fulfills well.
"He has the ability to arouse people emo
tionally," Ramsdell says. "He makes it tun
for the scout team. Because of that, they
give us a good look."
Although his future plans do not include
a coaching career, Moser is glad Rich
Brooks gave him an opportunity to coach.
He says it gives him a chance to begin
graduate school and get a new perspective
on coaching.
"I think it (coaching) is something every
player should go through, because I don't
think the players realize the time a coach
puts in," Moser says. "As a player I didn't
appreciate that.”
Moser also has experienced college foot
ball from the broadcasting booth. He com
plemented McKim's play-by-play with color
commentary for three Duck telecasts.
"It was fun," Moser says. "I had a really
good time doing it."
McKim, KEZI's sports director, gives
Moser credit for doing a good job in the
booth.
"He can give us some things that I can't,"
McKim says, noting Moser's familiarity with
players, formations and game plans.
Doing things others can't will keep Moser
employed in football until the day comes
when he has to, as he says, "grow up and
find a real job."
Mavericks snuff
Blazers, 123-117
DALLAS (AP) — Mark Aguirre
scored 15 of his 28 points in the
second half as the Dallas
Mavericks snuffed a Portland rally
and took a 123-117 victory over the
visiting Trail Blazers Wednesday
night in a National Basketball
Association game.
Portland, led by )im Paxson's 23
points, pulled to within 108-102
with four minutes left, but Dallas
hit six straight points to open up a
comfortable margin.
Center Pat Cummings scored 22
points, double his average, for
Dallas, while guard Brad Davis ad
ded 21 as the Mavericks raised
their record to 3-1. Kurt Nimphius
added 16 and Rolando Blackman
14 for Dallas.
Mychal Thompson scored 21
and Jeff Lamp 19 for Portland, 2-2,
which saw third-leading scorer

to the fourth quarter with 14
points.
In the third quarter, Paxson
scored 12 points and Natt had 10
of the Blazers' final 13 as Portland
pulled to within 94-86 after three
quarters.
In the first half, Dallas used a
22-11 spurt to take its biggest lead
at 40-26. The Mavericks outre

NBA referees
pick on scabs
BOSTON (AP) — Picketing
referees, led by union chief Richie
Phillips, handed out whistles to
fans going into Wednesday
night's Celtics home opener and
later entered Boston Garden amid
scattered applause.
"Blow your whistle on scab
referees," said one sign carried on
the picket line outside Boston
Garden before Celtics' game with
the Milwaukee Bucks.
"The whistles are just another
gimmick to call attention to our
position," said veteran referee Ed
Rush.
Prior to the start of the game,
the Celtics announced twice over
the public address system that
anyone "throwing an object or
blowing a horn or whistle will be
ejected immediately."
The referees have been without
a contract since Sept. 1.
Phillies' Denny
gets Cy Young
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — john
Denny of the Philadelphia Phillies
turned to the New Testament to
explain how he felt about winning
the National League Cy Young
Award on Wednesday.
The winningest pitcher in the
NL, read from Paul, declaring the
passage summed up how he felt
about the baseball honor:
"And I do all things for the sake
of the gospel that I may become a
fellow partaker of it. Do you not
know that those who run in a race
all run, but only one receives the
prize? Run in such a way that you
may win and that everyone who
competes in the game exercises
self control in all things.. ."
Denny, 30, compiled a 19-6
record in leading the Phillies to
the NL East title. He had the se
cond best earned run average,
2.37, and six without a loss in the
team's September drive to the
division championship.
