Beavers nip Ducks in volleyball match For the fifth time this year, Oregon State nipped the Oregon volleyball team in a non counting NorPac contest played at Corvallis Tuesday night. OSU, ranked 18th nationally, came from two games behind to win 8-15, 14-16, 15-8, 15-4, 15-13 over an inspired Duck volleyball squad. Oregon’s record dropped to 20-13. OSU, 22-5 overall, won the match thanks to Julie Steding’s play in the fifth game. Steding, an All-American candidate, helped the OSU team compile a convincing 21 kills in the final game. “Steding hurt us in the fifth game,” Oregon coach Chris Voelz said. “We had the fire power, but we had execution errors.” The Beavers had 83 kills com pared to the Ducks' 58. OSU’s Shari Jamison had top kill honors with 22. She was joined by Tami Rogers and Steding, who added 21 and 12 kills, respectively. Oregon’s All American candidate. Sue Har bour, had 23 kills in the losing cause. "We played very solid in game one and two,” Voelz said. "We got down in the third game and the whole secret to volleyball in keeping the intensity up.” The Ducks won’t get much rest after losing to the Beavers, because they travel down south to play in the UCLA Invitational this Friday and Saturday in Los Angeles. The invitational is one of the most prestigious in the nation, comprising twelve nationally ranked teams, including top ranked Hawaii and second ranked Pacific. Oregon starts off the tourna ment with Pepperdine at 9 a m. Friday. Brigham Young follows at 7:30 that night.
