Oregon's piled up 87 seasons
of good\ not-so-good football

Oregon fooball has taken many diferent turns in
its 87-year history.
Some years the Ducks had winning records like
6-5 or 8-3. While other seasons found the Ducks wad
dling with 2-9 and 3-8 records.
Over the years Ducks football has been about as
predictable as Mt. St. Helens. The overall 87-year
record of Oregon football is 371-345-46, a .516 winn
ing percentage. The Ducks have never had a winless
season, and only four times in 87 years have the
Ducks had one-win seasons.
Oregon football began in 1894 under coach Cal
Young, he even has a city road named for him. Young
guided his young Ducks to a 1-3 record that first cam
paign beating Albany College in the opener but drop
ping the next three games.
Through the years, the Ducks have played some
schools with some interesting names. In 1897, the
Ducks began a five-game series with the Chemeawa
Indians. In 1899 and 1900, Oregon faced a school call
ed Ashland Normal - now known as Southern
Oregon State College.
Along with the interesting opponents, in
teresting scores have coincided. In the early years,
the Ducks were routinely shutout during games or
routinely shutting its opponent out. It wasn't very
often that the Ducks and their the teams they were
playing would score in the same game.
After playing for 22 seasons as an independent,
Oregon finally joined a conference — the Pacific
Coast Conference in 1916. That first season in the
PCC saw the Ducks go 7-0-1 including a Rose Bowl
victory over Pennsylvania 14-0.
After 42 years in the PCC, the Ducks left the con
ference in 1958 — a year after playing in their third
Rose Bowl. Oregon lost to Harvard 7-6 in its second
Rose Bowl appearance in 1919. As an independent for
five years, the Ducks posted four winning seasons
under coach Len Casanova before Oregon joined the
Pacific-8 Conference. A conference that has changed

and Arizona State in 1978.
Although the Ducks haven't played in a post
season bowl game in many years, they have played in
their share.
Oregon has participated in three Rose Bowls. The
Ducks have a 1-2 record in Rose Bowl play beating
Penn while losing to Harvard and Ohio State.
Oregon played in the Sun Bowl in 1963 beating
Southern Methodist University 21-14. In 1960,
Oregon faced Penn. State in the Liberty Bowl losing
to the Nittany Lions 41-12.
Oregon once again played SMU in 1948, this time
in the Cotton Bowl where the Ducks lost 21-13.
In 87 years of coaching at Oregon, 28 coaches
have come and gone with Rich Brooks, currently the
Oregon football coach, being No. 29.
Len Casanova, who coached the Ducks from 1951
to 1966 — the longest anv coach has been at Oregon,
has one of the best coaching marks. He posted eight
winning seasons with a best of 8-2-0 in 1959. He took
the Ducks to their most recent Rose Bowl ap
pearence in 1957 against Ohio State.
Since Casanova's departure, Jerry Frei, Dick
Enright, Don Read and Brooks have taken the reigns
but none has been as successful as Casanova.
Individually, many great players have passed
through Oregon before going on to the professional
ranks and attaining stardom.
Probably the most famous ex-Duck in the pros is
San Diego quarterback Dan Fouts. Fouts, who set all
of the Oregon career records in total offense, passes
completed and passing yardage, is setting the Na
tional Football League record books on fire.
Ahmad Rashad, known as Bobby Moore during
his days with Oregon, had a brillant career with the
Minnesota Vikings. At Oregon, he is the Ducks'
leading all-time rusher. He also has scored more
points than any other Duck in history.
As a team and individually, Oregon has It
mark in collegiate football history. Who's to say
the next 87 years will bring.
