Reporters drinking assignment;
test, report back, fall into gutter

Of the Emerald
It's 3:30 p.m. and deadline is drawing near. The
editor runs to my desk. "DeFrisco’s is serving
Homecoming drinks! Get on it right away. I want it
on my desk in the morning!” But you know I only
drink hard alcohol! “Do it." / grab my trusty assistant.
Most journalists keep a flask of whiskey in their
desk drawers. I have a bag of Oreo cookies. Obvious
ly. I wasn't the woman for the job, but I agreed, hop
The Quackattack turned out to be, oddly enough,
green and yellow. The mellon liqueur sat on the bot
tom. It was green. The orange juice was on top. It was
yellow. For someone who likes their drinks clear,
strong and deadly, it looked weak. I hate drinks with
fruit.
I decided that perhaps this drink wasn't all bad. It
had an orange slice on the rim, after all. And how
could I go wrong with orange juice and a sweet
honeydew liqueur? The first sip didn't knock me out.
The evening was shaping up.
I took a hefty swig and choked. "You have to stir
ing for a raise. The date was set for
I grabbed a fifth of whiskey to
fortify myself on the journey.
Where's deFrisco's anyway? Oh
yeah, at the Atrium downtown.
With the thought of free drinks
running through my mind, I knew
we'd get the scoop.
I grabbed an Oreo. We set off
into the night.
The bar was dark and smoke
filled. We pushed our way
through the crowd, searching for
our photographer. We finally
found him in a corner booth,
already well on his way to the dep
ths of alcohol deprivation and tell
ing his life story to a woman in
black.
We pulled the photographer
from his friend and reminded him
of the importance of our mission.
We flagged down a bartender and
ordered our first drink. I ordered a
Kamikaze, but my assistant

it up," the barter
der said. I tried again. It tasted like
the orange juice I drank in the
morning. Not enough alcohol. I
ordered another.
One drink down. I decided to
be daring and ordered a
Quackerbacker. No luck. The
bartender said they were out of
the green beer. Just as well, I
guess. I'm not that daring.
Another Quackattack down
the hatch. I waited for the alcohol
to hit me. And waited. And
waited. I ordered a Scotch —on
the rocks— and tried again. And
again. And again.
By this time, our photo
grapher had disappeared with the
woman in black. My boss began
singing World War II ballads, and
he kept telling Sam to play it
again, whoever Sam is. I called a
cab. The bartender helped me
drag the chief to the curb. After
much cajoling, the the chief
reminded me of our quest. I settled for a Quack
attack. Rats.
Gads, what was I doing here? Caught between
my aversion to alcohol and my attraction for paying
my bills, I ordered a Perrier. No luck. It was drink or
be fired. I chose my job. The bartender brought the
first round. The situation looked grim.
climbed into the cab. I gave the driver ten bucks and
the boss's address. I said goodnight.
"Goodnight, kid," the boss said. "If you need
me, just whistle."
I wandered back inside and ordered a 7-Up —
straight.
