Vision of an 'antic eye' Photographs: Annie Leibovitz Annie Leibovitz Pantheon/Rolling Stone Press 100 Pages, $35.00 If Annie Leibovitz were to photograph herself, her self portrait would go one step further than those she has shot of the Six ties Avant-Garde. Unorthodox celebrity she is, but even more, she's one of its chief chroniclers. In 1970 when she was a 20-year old art student, she managed to get “Rolling Stone" art director, Robert Kingsbury, to look at her portfolio. He hired her. Within a month, her first portrait of John Lennon appeared on the cover of the magazine. Since then, she has shot cover after cover for "Rolling Stone." Leibovitz's work represents some of the most celebrated of celebrity journalism, and her reputation is on iine with that of Richard Avendon's. Her photographs have filled and covered "Time," "Life," "Vanity Fair," Newsweek," and "Vogue." Though the name,“Leibovitz," • fail to ring a bell for some ignore photo credits, her clean, hard-edged, poster-like por traits are some of the most ar- ; ticulate objets d'art that the rock'n'rolling stone generation has in its visual memory. This handsome book, graced with a superb introduction by Tom Wolfe, is the first published collection of Leibovitz's photography. Of the 69 full- or double-page spread photographs (most of them shot in primary col- 1 ors), more than half were publish ed in "Rolling Stone" between . 1975 and 1982. No chronological ( or other easily discernible se quence dictates the arrangement. The apparent random order exag gerates the unpredictable beauty and insightful whimsy of each portrait. Like anything well executed, Leibovitz's photographs are deceptively simple. They're mark ed by surprise, humor, curiosity, compassion and an un-ordinary insight into American stardom and culture. They're obviously made by a person gifted with two of the most important tools a photojournalist can have: a clear eye, and an ability to understand Continued on Page 8B Meryl Streep is one of the many celebrities photographed by Annie Leibovitz and displayed in her book.
